social media casualties? (11 posts)

  • Wondering if there would be any discussion about social media casualties as a result of spending too much time online, maybe considered an “addiction?”Horror stories? Prevention measures? Never heard of such a thing?

Of course, hours on SME don’t count!!! :)

  • Other than SME, I have found 2 experts that I follow. I also follow the advice of one who said “avoid the shiny objects”. In other words, all the fancy little gadgets that come along may only slow down my reaching my goals.

I ignore all the posts about this new product an that new gadget until I have mastered the basics and have a highly profitable business model.

All that time online keeps me from that.

  • love the shiny new  objects  idea…. i have to stay pretty  basic…and  listen to  a couple of places and  try and  observe other   similar  places to us…

i think  facebook  destroyed my  blog!!!  i love my blog  but  facebook   works  so much better….no time for  both…

our  solution at home is  2  laptops…at night we  watch tv  together and  are online  doing whatever we do….  …

i try to  ban computer  time    at the  store   knowing  how   time  wasting it  could  be….

  • thanks for your input… here’s to having self-control! @tracourt @annfurnivall

  • As a cutting edge developer, I disagree with the “avoid shiny objects” interpretation.

I agree that be careful with things that “look good” but “deliver nothing” I understand that concept, but I dont agree with avoiding new or obscure gadgets.

For example, I create new tools all the time… and I’m of the belief that if anything can make your life “easier” then use it.  Even the obscure can be good.  Sometimes the hidden gems (obscure tools) that arent mainstream can give you an “edge”.

    Anyway, thats just my opinion.

  • sounds like your are warning us not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, right,Vincent? @vincentedwards @tracourt @annfurnivall

  • i can see  both sides….but  for  someone  at my  understanding level i need to keep  more on the  simple side..im  not tekkie  enough  to make  many  judgements   on   most of  this  stuff….. but  if i hear enough  good  reports i  can take it to my  tekk person…

  •  I was misunderstood. You apparently are quite successful and knowledgable of your craft. Please check the part where I said “until I master the basics…”.

If I were past that point, yes, I agree.

    @vincentedwards

  • good discussion here, thanks @tracourt @annfurnivall @vincentedwards

  • @tracourtI understand.  I actually gave this more thought and agree with the merit too that sometimes when something brand new and shiny comes out (like when they use to release the windows OS) sometimes it pays to wait a little, until all the bugs are ironed out, so it can apply to software.

@annfurnivall Yes, but my approach is to make software that helps make your life easier.  Thats why I like to create tools to automate things.
