Should you give away your product? (3 posts)

  • Just read a fascinating article in Forbes:

Should you give away your product?

I think Social Media Examiner’s free forum Networking Clubs could be a very good example of this marketing model. I’m curious to see how the percentage of converters in the Forbes article’s examples compare to what eventually happens with SME’s Small Biz Success Summit attendees.

This started me thinking about how this is exactly what other very successful IM marketers  do to attract and keep large fan and blog lists, ultimately projecting their success skyward when those percentages convert to backend sales.

What do you think? Do you give away your product?

  • Hi Robin… Seems to me that SME is focusing on becoming an incredibly valuable resource for all things social and crowd sourcing content to this end. This attracts prospects [their mailing list is now 120k strong] because they get incredible value for free. The back-end provides the bucks

If you were to launch a digital product, you would give away 3 simple but powerful tips that focus on getting your prospects unstuck and moving towards their goal. This proves that your advice works and builds excitement.

Moving the Free-line like this comes in various shapes and sizes as you can see but the Freemium business model is slightly and subtly different…

  • @atlantarobin I think @roryramsden said it well.

Using a Freemium model is different, but you have to have something of value for a large number of users to ultimately make it pay.
