Selling Digitsl Products (eBooks) (9 posts)

Topic tags: digital products, paypal
  • Hey everybody! I’m in a bit of a rut. We are going to start selling Digitsl copies of our comic book but the problem is piracy. This is how it’s going to work. Person goes to our site clicks the PayPal button to buy the digital copy. They pay then Paypal redirects them to a page with the download. Problem?? .. They can just copy the URL and send it to others or post it online then anybody can paste it in their browser and it’s free. I need a solution. Iv been to many sites that offer Digital product carts but it’s always the same problem.Does anybody know a site or shopping cart where someone can’t just copy and paste the URL to get free copies? Thanks!!

  • @sgsrecording

I have not set up a site selling digital products so I’m curious to hear from someone who has. But without the benefit of that experience I would suggest the following:

Easy – send the link to them in an email.
Not so Easy – set up a membership site where they would go to their account “downloads” area to access the link.

  • You could have a password protected page that comes up without a url. Emailing the product is most likely the safest and easiest.

My feeling is that if you’ve got a good product, put it out there and people will buy it. Some people will steal it and that’s the breaks. It’s most likely worth it for the majority of people will purchase, and both ways, you’re getting it out there.
Also, you could look at some sites that have paid e-books and see what they’re doing.

  • Hi @sgsrecording,

This is a common problem and an easy one to solve whether you are a programmer or not. If you are a programmer, it’s easy to hide the true URL of the content and then just pipe it through your download form. I’ve got it setup this way so I can hand out review copies of my book.

If you aren’t a programmer or don’t want to go through the hassle, I suggest a shopping cart system that handles it for you. I use foxycart.com (partly because I know the guys behind it) and it does a great job. You upload your book to their server and when someone purchases it, they give them a link that is not the true link to the book but will allow them to down load it.

It took me a couple of hours to get it setup and to get one of their WordPress plugins installed and configured. The result is a seamless operation and it solves not only that problem but several others.

Most shopping cart services will handle digital products for you so don’t feel you have to use foxycart.com; it’s just what worked for me. :)

  • @juleswebb @margiemintz @calevans Thank you for your suggestions! @calevans Is foxycart free? And won’t people be able to just copy and paste the link to get t it again?

  • @sgsrecording,No, Foxycart is not free, I believe it’s $20!mo.No, the URL that the user is given is not the real URL, when a user goes to that URL, the user checks to make sure it’s not been used yet before it allows them to download the content. The user can’t discover the real location of the content. Programmatically, it’s trivial to build, I use Foxycart because I don’t want to matain it. :)=C=

  • You can also look at e-junkie.com, this might be an even more cost effective solution if you are selling just 1 ebook.

  • You could use sites like Cartville and e-junkie as well@sgsrecording |

you can also sell it on Amazon Kindle!!!! :D

  • Here is more info on Amazon Kindle

Here is where you can setup your blog subscriptions on Amazon:https://kindlepublishing.amazon.com

here is where you want to go to publish content of yours on Kindle:http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?ie=UTF8&docId=1000234621

And here is where you go for Kindle Direct Publishinghttps://kdp.amazon.com/self-publishing/signinwhere you can self publish things like ebooks or PDFs, etc.
