Segmenting question for Google Analytics (3 posts)

Topic tags: Analytics
  • I am in the process of redoing a website for a consulting company with a variety of service offerings.

The company has a product,to be released soon, which has its own domain.

I believe the product should be migrated to the main company website as to increase brand awareness and also gain the SEO juice from the content planned to be written about the product.

The company is concerned that visits to the main company website specifically for the product would interfere with all website traffic, thus skewing conversions: visits, visitors/leads, leads/proposals

Has anyone ever had to deal with this situation?

What is the best way to handle it?

Any Google Analytics trick to segment this easily for monthly reports?

  • @scottwyden

Well, you could segment traffic that comes directly to the directory for the new product.

How long has the product and domain been out there? If it’s brand new I would fold it into the site…maybe 301 redirect it to company.com/product

I’m not sure I would be worried about skewing traffic, conversions, etc. You could set up specific goals just for the product. More traffic isn’t skewing traffic, it’s all good, IMHO.

    Unless I’m missing something obvious.

  • @rich-brooks I’m thinking the same thing actually.   I don’t see a downside and could easily segment with a specific goal for the product versus current leads (via premium downloads)

I have to compile the pros and cons of merging the product site (which has been live for a year but with minimal traffic)
