Secure online password management (10 posts)

  • Are there any good web based tools that are secure to help manage passwords for all my different accounts?

I was just out of town and realized I had several new business tools and couldn’t remember the username and PW combinations, which are recorded in my office.

I used to use one of 3 passwords so it was easy to remember, but decided that is getting too risky these days. On the other hand, having that out in cyberspace scares me too.

    Any ideas, experiences, opinions?

  • @joanmuschampfagnani my fiance uses one password and swears by it. I use lastpass as its free and syncs across all your browsers, I really rate it! hope that helps?

  • @joanmuschampfagnani  I too, struggled with password management but instead of using yet another site to help manage this problem, I came up with a formula that creates a very strong, unique password for every site I visit.  It is a very simple way to have an unlimited amount of secure passwords that you’ll never forget.  I’ve been using this formula for about a year and it’s time I shared it with others.  I’m not sure how succinctly I could explain it in writing, since this is the first time I’ve given sharing it any thought.  I would be happy to explain it to you over the phone or maybe I’ll work on writing a How-To article that I can post.  Feel free to call me at home at 941-349-9032 if you’d like me to explain it to you.

I use keepass to organize all my and my client passwords and then I use dropbox to make it easily accessible no matter where I’m at.

Keepass even has a portable version that runs without any additional installation and won’t store any settings outside the application directory.

  • Thanks @juleswebb  @mgoes  @hmmarketing I will be looking at all of these.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani

Like @mgoes I have created a technique based on the site that I’m on…in most cases.

Also, I recently read that the crazy passwords we create, often replacing vowels with numbers, are difficult for us to remember, but easy for hackers to crack!

(I believe I read it in Wired magazine.)

They recommend instead coming up with a four word sentence that would be difficult to guess but easy to remember.

For example, your password for the clubs could be Smallbizexpertsunite (although I’d still replace at least one vowel w/a number!)

  • Hi @joanmuschampfagnani
1Password has donde the job for the past two years in my iMac and iPad. Really easy to sync since I have it with dropbox and never had a problem with it.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani Since nearly all of my accounts are somehow web-based, all I do is to let my browser (Rockmelt, in my case) remember the passwords – including auto-sync it between my Macs and mobile devices. Some 3rd party app never came into my mind, actually.

  • Dear all, thank you for your sharings. Coming from the  IT security environment it was really interesting for me to read how you handle password management. Considering the massive password hackings of the last years even against large vendors and social media themselves (think of Linkedin which just happened a couple of months ago) I would recommend that you should not just use security common practices like really long passwords, consisting of lower and upper case, as well as digits and symbols, but also relying on hardware devices that can withstand attacks. On the one side the responsability of your passwords relies on the service administration; for that you can just hope that he is doing all he can and should to protect your data; but the user itself can do a lot to increase the defensive barriers; based on the comments of this thread I have created a new FAQ on a vendor’s website I am servicing for marketing; you might want to check

  • Hi All, many thanks for your postings on password management.
I am finding the topic advice giving relevant tips to my current review of my ICT strategy for the business and general good practice. @hmmarketing@daniela-previtali
I tend to stick with one password and even change my passwords every couple of months, although this is becoming a bit of a problem as I increase my on-line activity etc.especially as I am often not desk bound and sometimes on the move.

@daniela-previtali I would be interterested in reading your FAQ on the website you refer to.
