Scanners for Business Cards and other things (7 posts)

  • I would be very interested in knowing if you use a particular business/receipt/document scanning program/scanner  on a regular basis. Pros & cons of any you recommend?. Does it send the card scan to Outlook or some other program?  Names, Prices, reliability, ease of use, etc. Do you have a card scan App  on your Iphone or Android phone and which works best? I have been researching this for the past 6-8 months and have not felt comfortable with any I have looked at.  I may to too picky.

  • HI Trudy.
Check out http://www.shoeboxed.com. It is a fantastic set up and very easy to use. They scan all your receipts and business cards and then human verify it and you can then download all your data into excel or a csv file. And – if you ever want to see the actual receipt a crystal image is right there on line for your review. They have iphone apps to scan your stuff on the go or you can email receipts in. ou can even send all your stuff in by post if you want to. It’s really useful and very reasonably priced. There are different levels for pricing too. I am a relatively new user of this service but it has been fantastic so far and was recommended by my book keeper who says it is great!

Actually, I just checked and it looks like you can get a free trial directly from the website. There is a promo going at the moment that if I invite three people they get to check it out for free and if one signs up – I get a small credit on my account or something like that. But I am not sure if my invite gets you a higher level of service than what you get directly from the website or not. So you can go either way ;-)

The thing I love about it is it integrates with Xero – my online accounting system and so I save time! Who wouldn’t love that! It integrates with lots of other stuff too….check it out.
I hope this helps (and that it is not one of the ones you have already researched!)

  • @libbythompson Thanks Libby!! Kudos, that is just the sort of thing I need currently, I have all my receipts in folders all bundled up for the accountant ughh.

  • @trudy I used to use CardScan but found the more “creative” busienss cards got, the worse the results.

In another discussion, I mentioned using a QR code on your business cards so a smartphone user can scan an immediately add to contacts. If more cards used this, it would be helpful.

  • @trudy, I started using CardMunch quite awhile ago on my iPhone. And, I love it! Not only do I get the contact, but the picture that I took of the card remains a part of the record. Easy to share with anyone :)

The picture is sent to a team where it is transcribed properly & the info returned to you. You can have the contacts automatically entered into your contact list on your phone, which syncs through iCloud.

I’m totally Mac based, so don’t know how it connects into Outlook, but would think that it would since Apple is offering it to the Windows world.

  • Yes – the shoeboxed app also keeps an image of the actual card as well.

  • Hey no worries @ptwylie. Hope you find it as useful as I do ;-)
