  • There is a wealth of literature on Social Media out there. I’m trying to get 2 or 3 books, but I’m overwhelmed by the choices. What books should I pick up?

Of course LAUNCH by Mike Stelzner is on everyone’s list. But what other books would your recommend to understand online Social Media, that also has the best (and up to date) tips on applying the material to real life?

Is there one book in particular that gave you an eureka moment?

Any suggestion is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

While not really a social media self help book I highly recommend reading Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson. I am about 1/3 of the way through and it is very enlightening and a must read for anyone who is even remotely interested in marketing.

I am also reading Guerilla Social Media Marketing. There is no Eureka moment so far but some very good common sense advice.

  • @peterurfer

Thanks for mentioning my book.  I would also check out Dave Kerpen’s Likeable Social Media.

Lastly, we do book reviews here at SME.  See http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/tag/book-review/

  • I recommend Socialnomics by Erik Qualman.  I found it full of useful information and ideas.
Didn’t know about your book LAUNCH @mike-stelzner but I will make it my next read (If it’s half as informative as Social Media Examiner, it will be money well spent).  Thanks @peterurfer for the mention.

p.s. did I do the @ thing right?

  • @djmcclinton You did the @ thing right :)

  • @fierce_living, @mike-stelzner, @djmcclinton

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll check them out and see what I will load on my kindle. I does seem that Steve Jobs is a must-read. Everyone I spoke to is raving about it, but always for different reasons.

@mike-stelzner for some reason I didn’t find the book review tag. Thanks for pointing it out. :)

As far as social media books goes I can strongly recommend Chris Brogan & Julien Smith’s Trust Agents and Gary V’s Crush It.

  • Agree with all of the above and would add:

Content Rules by Ann Handley & C.C. Chapman – killer.

Zarrella’s Hierarchy of Contagiousness, Dan Zarrella

Real-Time Marketing & PR, David Meerman Scott (actually pretty much anything by him).

  • I would like to add the following to the list:

The Success Principles by Jack Canfield

Book Yourself Solid by Michael Port

  • Great suggestions.

Here are two books I would like to suggest:

    • The War of Art Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles by Steven Pressfield
    • The Millionaire Messenger Make a Difference and a Fortune Sharing Your advice by Brendon Buchard

  • Thanks everyone for this great list!
Time to do some last minute Xmas (book) shopping now… ;)

  • Some excellent suggestions.

I’d like to add “Customer Service: New Rules for a Social Media World” by Peter Shankman.

  • One of the best books I’ve read in a long time, with lots of applications for ‘treps:

    Mindset by Carol Dweck

  • Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions by Guy Kawasaki

  • @peterurfer

All the above (a couple I need to check out) and for Twitter I recently read a non-profit book called ‘Twitter for Social Good’ by erm…Claire Diaz-Ortiz (quick visit to Amazon there!) and for business (transfer the info) it makes perfect sense.

Not Social Media but helps with it, I found Made to Stick by the Heath Brothers a fantastic read, and helped me look at my social media activities differently.

And the people I recommend and websites are Social Media Examiner (I always start here when looking for something) In fact, the people I recommend others to look at are all in this SME club, how awesome is that?

    Happy reading.

PS @themusclediva Carol Dweck a great book.

  • Thank you all for the great suggestions :)

  • I am still fairly new to all the social outlets available and have only just started reading intensely on the subject, I have been reading “Smart Business, Social Business” by Michael Brito..he takes quite a different approach to the game by talking about the impact of social media on a company and how to properly position ones self or business rather than telling how to set it up.
    Thoughts??
    Thanks,  John AKA Swoops

  • I would also suggest Groundswell by Evelyn Li and Josh Bernoff. It’s a couple of years old now, I believe, but offers some really good frameworks for understanding social technologies, which remain relevant.
