Read any good books lately? (22 posts)

  • I’m a voracious reader and I’m always looking for new business books. Silly as it sounds I’m currently reading a YA book about grammar from The Grammar Girl. It’s really good and easy to understand. As a blogger I put this book into the business category.

    What’s your favorite business book?

  • @amyhallbiz Picking a favorite business book is difficult for me as I try and read a lot also.

Were I to pick one, I’m going to go with “Green Eggs and Ham.”  I’d choose this non-traditional “business” book as it’s all about selling.  As a salesperson, you can never take the first negative response as the final answer.

Right now I’m reading the following:

    • Bullwinke on Business:  Motivational Secrets of a Chief Executive Moose
    • The X and Y of Buy:  Sell more and market better by knowing how the sexes shop
    • Listen First!  Turning Social Media Conversations into Business Advantage
    • What?  Are These the 20 Most Important Questions in Human History – Or Is This a Game of 20 Questions?

I also read an ebook or two a day on different marketing subjects, but those are usually pretty short so I won’t count them.

  • @dakotalocal I love Green Eggs and Ham! But I never thought of it as a business book! So Cool!

  • Almost done reading Brian Solis’ latest book, The End of Business as Usual. An awesome read, filled with stats and very enlightening insights on the state of business right now. The need to embrace social media in order to engage with the connected consumer becomes quite clear after reading this opus…

    Highly recommended!
    Cheers,
    Frederic

  • Yes, It is very difficult to choose one business book. Of course Napoleon Hill’s ‘Think and Grow Rich’ is at the top of the list. I also liked Harry Beckwith’s book ‘Selling the Invisible’ Now back to reading a book from my first love…science:)

    • The Fall of Advertising and The Rise of PR, Al Ries
    • Tested Advertising Methods, John Caples
    • Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, Stephen Covey

You can tell, I do not read a lot of books. The last time I bought a book was in 2002. There’s plenty of information online. RSS feeds alone, I am subscribed to about 200. It’s how I keep myself up to date. Then there’s content shared on my social network.

  • Steve Jobs biography

  • @rlmosca That’s the next book on my list!

  • @amyhallbiz You will be glad you bought it!

I got this from the biography on Steve Jobs:

“Here’s to the crazy ones.  The misfits.  The rebels.  The troublemakers.  The round pegs in the square holes.  The ones who see things differently.  They’re not fond of rules.  And have no respect for the status quo.  You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them.  About the only thing you can’t do is ignore  them.  Because  they  change things.  They push the human race forward.  And while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.  Because the people who are crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do.”

  • @amyhallbiz  2 of my favorites this year have been about content:

Content Rules by Ann Handley & C.C. Chapman and Content Strategy for the Web by
    Kristina Halvorson

This third one also about content by Joe Pulizzi has been on my list:
Managing Content Marketing: The Real-World Guide for Creating Passionate Subscribers to Your Brand

  • And when you are all ready for a little lighter reading, try out my three novels: “Oliver’s Surprise” and “Cape Cod Surprise” are about a young boy who goes back in time to two different hurricanes (1938 and 1954). “Game of Sails” is an Olympic love story, based on my own experiences. Excerpts are available at http://www.carolnewmancronin.com. Enjoy and happy New Year!

  • I am not much of a reader, but I do spend a lot of time in my car – so I check out Business books on CD from the library.

Recently, I listened to “Tribes” by Seth Godin. In fact, I liked it so much, I bought the book – as it’s one I want to read with post-its and highlighters in hand.

Now, I’m listening to “Lynchpin”, also by Seth Godin – and I’m loving it just as much.

Also love “Crush It” and “Thank You Economy” by Gary Vaynerchuk!

Thanks for these great books to add to my list!

  • One book that is AWESOME for personal as well as business that many have not heard of…”Fierce Conversations” by Susan Scott

  • @traceywarren  Yes Seth Godin  & Gary Vaynerchuk are two of my favorites!

  • @charlynshelton-socialmediainterpreter  I have seen some good reviews about Fierce Conversations” by Susan Scott thanks for reminding to check it out!

  • @amyhallbiz

A year or so back I wrote a post for Fast Company called 13 Business Books That Will Blow Your Mind.

It’s time to write a new list, because my NUMBER ONE, FAVORITE BUSINESS BOOK I just finished re-reading. I then wrote 7 blog posts on the book. One for each of the tenents, and one for the introduction.

The introduction blog post is going up on Tuesday to start the new year off right.

    What’s the book you ask?

Robert Cialdini’s Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion. Not only does he include loads of research (his and others), he actually goes under cover in used car dealerships, vacuum cleaner companies, and high end restaurants, to learn how they use different “weapons of influence” in their sales and marketing.

Fascinating read. Can’t say enough about it.

  • @rich-brooks  I loved Influence. My husband is reading The Speed of Trust by Stephen Covey. As soon as he finishes it… it’s mine!

  • Oooo theres so many I could write here! But a few of my favourite are:

    - Emyth Revisited by Michael E Gerber

    - The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari – Robin Sharma

    - The 4 hour work week – Tim Ferris

    - The Secret – Rhonda Byrne

    Enjoy!!!

  • I’m currently reading (almost finished!) The Social Customer by Adam Metz. Up next is No B.S. Social Media by Jason Falls and Erik Deckers. Personally, even though I’ve already seen the movie, I need to read War Horse by Michael Morpurgo. Lastly, I’m thumbing through the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority’s Doing Business in Fairfax County (VA) in preparation of launching a LLC with some friends. Still need to finish up Engaged by Brian Solis too…

Thanks for all the great book/reading ideas! Feel free to check out my reading list on LinkedIn too.

  • Love this post as I love to read. There are quite a few listed throughout the varying posts that I will have to put on my “To Read List.”
Many of you may know this already but @MikeStelzner published a wonderful marketing book geared toward small business -

http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/launch/ where you can also download a free chapter. Oh and just in case you are wondering that is NOT an affiliate link. I suggest this book because it is a good book.
Another book, which was released in October of 2011 is The New Relationship Marketing: How to Build a Large, Loyal, Profitable Network Using the Social Web by Mari Smith. A great book on a very important topic.
Download a free chapter at: http://marismith.com/NewRelationshipMarketing_MariSmith_SampleChapter.pdf
I have read Engage by Brian Solis and I do like the book. I plan to read his recent book. Another book I have read and liked is Enchantment by Guy Kawasaki. You can find more information at: https://www.facebook.com/enchantment
If you are interested in creating video and who isn’t these days. I suggest want Get Seen by Steve Garfield. You might want to visit Steve’s Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/getseen.
The last one I want to suggest is Facebook Marketing All-In-One for Dummies 9 Books In 1. It is a fabulous marketing book. It is authored by three industry experts; Amy Porterfield, Phyllis Khare and Andrea Vahl. You can find information about this book at:
    https://www.facebook.com/GetTheBook

  • Just finished reading Brainfluence by Roger Dooley – and interviewed him about the book here:  http://thewordchef.com/2011/12/brainfluence-roger-dooley/

Brainfluence gives you 100 practical ways to use neuromarketing techniques in your own marketing. Fun read!

  • I have not read Influence – I must get a copy. I did read Flipnosis earlier this year and enjoy it very much. Flipnosis is also about influence. I wanted to read more business books this year but I got caught up in the epic “Game of thrones” series and read a 5 back to back = they are mind-blowing.

I have just finished “Engagement from scratch” collated by Danny Iny, it’s a series of articles grouped into topics. you can download for free here http://www.engagementfromscratch.com/download.html

I have also read Business Writing Made Easy by Suzan St Maur http://www.amazon.com/Business-Writing-Made-Easy-Suzan/dp/1907498834in this she includes a conversation we had about blogging / writing / journalism so I got an advance copy.

I have heard great thing about a book called “Pitch anything” so that’s on my to-do list.

@Donna – Get Seen looks interesting. Thanks for the recommend
