question for website developers (13 posts)

  • I have a flowershop and have been thinking about an animated logo where a stick type person plucks the flower out of my logo or header and hands it towards the screen (so it looks like it’s being handed to the person checking out my website)  Is it possible? would it slow down load time too much and turn people away? any suggestions? Thanks

  • @jeniferswansonHello! I am not a web developer but if i may post. I am not sure about the speed aspect, but now a days it is very importat that you do not use flash because most mobile devices cannot load flash. (ALL Apple products and some smart phones) If you do not know what flash is, it can basically make the animation you want. There are many other options that work with all devices such as HTML5 but again I am no expert here. I just decided to post because I saw no one had yet and I felt bad just passing it by hehe :) The benefits to having your website work full on mobile devices i think are pretty self explanitory. Im on my ipad 2 now and I havent used my desktop in weeks. the only bad thing is I cant use the edit text options at the top of the text box and I cant double space.Anyway, Take Care & Good Luck!!

  • Jenifer,

It’s a creative idea but I agree with @sgsrecording about speed and accessibility. Most people have short attention spans and/or are in a hurry. They want to get what they need on a Web site and get out. You don’t want them to be frustrated by the opening animation and click away from your site.

  • @jeniferswanson Such a cute idea! You could do it with an animated GIF and it will work on iPhones and iPads. A GIF can be optimized and compacted so hopefully the file size shouldn’t impact your website speed too much.

Personally I would sink the money into making sure your website was user friendly.

  • It is an awesome idea.  This kind of question is what makes these forums so awesome.  Most people would have the same reaction about the flash, but then someone suggests the GIF.

Thank you all fortaking the timetoshare your questions and suggestions.  I amlearning a lot already.

  • @jeniferswanson

I’m going to recommend against the moving logo, animated gif or not.

I don’t imagine that you’ll sell any more flowers because of it, and unless you hire a really good animator (read: expensive) it could come off as cheesy and hurt your brand, especially since you’re in the business of beauty!

A bouquet of roses doesn’t get any more beautiful because you add a sparkling, spinning pinwheel to the vase.

Less is more, and the money you save on the moving logo would be better spent on some SEO (Search Engine Optimization), a year’s worth of email marketing, or a custom designed Facebook landing page, as a few examples.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you everyone for your replys.  You’re probably right @richbrooks, I just think my industry has a problem with “cookie cutter” type websites. Thanks again

  • A short intro or greeting is a great way to set the tone of a users visit to your site. I like your idea, it creates a wonderful “first impression”.

@sgsrecording It is important to make sure mobile users are not left out but I don’t think limitations of some devices should dictate the experience of all visitors to a site.

In the regards to Flash. Go for it! Bring a rich user experience to the majority of visitors and offer up mobile appropriate content to the rest.

  • Thank you @markjohnson. I thought it would be cute but maybe not practical.  My industry does have a problem with sameness and cookie cutter look. We seem to network with other florist providers instead of stepping out of the box.

  • @jeniferswanson  One of the things to look at is visitor experience on your website. Who’s using your services? Men or women… age range… their comfort with technology… If most of your customers are women ages 50 to 60, your site should be fast to load, easy to navigate and place orders on. Nothing flashing, simple and basic with some beautiful pictures of flower will grab their attention. If your clients are females from 20 – 30, you’ll need a mobile website along with a normal website. Using flash on you regular website would work. These ladies are used website load time and like a beautiful, visually appealing site. They’re also pretty techy so you can use a more advanced e-commerce solution. But you will need a separate mobile site, because this age group uses mobile phones and pads frequently.

You have such a visual product that you’ll need lots of photos.  I think if you have amazing photos of your flowers they’ll sell themselves.

  • @amyhall, i’m not sure I can narrow down age group. A majority of sales are for funerals and can be any age and a lot of companies.  I’m trying to entice more brides by showing our bridal work but not necessarily prices.  I  seem to have a lot of people call and say i’m on your website and want……  While I know some will say that’s a problem with my site, I think people are still uncomfortable putting their credit card out there and also need personal interaction when ordering flowers.  Its a specialty item expressing emotion- you can’t pick off the rack like a shirt.

of course I could be completely wrong and it is a problem with my site lol

  • @jeniferswanson  although I work for an animation company (cough)  I agree with @rich-brooks  I don’t recommend having animations on your site unless really needed. Having animated logo would help you sell flowers at all.

like what @amyhallbiz said I would rather invest it to making your site user friendly or to search engine optimzation

  • @aleriejoydeveza, thankyou – maybe I could use the idea for an advertisement or utube video.  I appreciate everyones feedback, You guys really make me want to learn more, more, more
