Question about followers on Pinterest (19 posts)

Topic tags: pinterest
  • Since the past week I have seen that I have gotten more and more follewers, when I go back to see their profile and boars, all of them have the same characteristics: hundreds of boards (average 260) with just one pin on each one, following thousands of people and with no more information about them to share. Now they are representing about the 30% of my followers.

Of course I’m not following them back, but what can be their goal doing this?, are someone else here experiencing the same situation?

  • interesting….i would just ignore  also…..  wonder what their plot is….?

  • I have had the same experience.  I am not sure what is going on but I see no point in how they are using Pinterest.  I just received a message that I had a new follower and when I checked her out she has no boards.  It makes no sense to me at all.

  • that’s curious, haven’t had that problem @hildaalanisgonzalez

  • Yes Dea, it is curious, this night from 9 notifications, 6 of them have hundreds of boards with just one pin each one, this time following just few, but liking a lot of pins.

  • Yes I am getting on mine too – they often have no links either or just Facebook or just Twitter – I just check out Twitter account and can tell its spam then ignore them but is time wasting! I dont know what their aim is – I guess if they can get access to your facebook details etc and you have your birthday on their and lots of information which they can then use to try hack your accounts or something? Wish these people had better things to do – I struggle to find the time just to get what I need done!

  • I’ve seen them too,  I just thought they were new to pinning and have not gotten the idea, they think you enter and watch.  I wouldn’t judge them – some of them are real FB friends. I think people are checking it out, but not everyone understands it . . .

  • That is very strange…now that you mention it, thought it was odd when I checked mine out and many were only one photo on one board…hope it is not a deliberate thing…I have been checking out those that follow, and do not follow just because they follow mine. Also…have been trying to add all SME members I see that have Pinterest, so please let me know, and I will just add you now…thanks!

  • @mssilvr I’m following you on Pinterest, I couldn’t open your FB page, feel free to follow back Teocalli Collections, that’s me!

  • @hildaalanisgonzalezSigh. Whenever a platform becomes popular the next wave is the marketers and right on their heels the spammers!I’m guessing if you head over to Fiverr you can now buy hundreds of Pinterest followers…probably bogus accounts like this one.

  • @rich-brooks what???
@hildaalanisgonzalez  Thank you! I do not yet have a FB business page …Pinterest has been a source of exposure, which, for my business is extremely important! Since we are all searching for the best media for our product, I guess we just have to try different things…I try to keep legitimate businesses on my pin list (BHG, Kraft, friends at SME  etc.) I will follow you back also…sorry I am so slow!
    Sincerely,  Georgi
    @mambamedia good point Karen!

  • I’ve noticed it too recently, in fact my husband told me that someone was finally following his company (bedrockcg) and when I checked it out the guy had 40+ boards with one pin each. The next morning, I had a notification that the same guy was following my artist boards (paintedhill) and also the cabinet company I work for (canyoncreekcabs)!

All three accounts have different logins, and none are linked to FB. Turns out he’s following more than 10,000 people, although he does now have multiple pins on a lot of his boards. Maybe just a lot of time on his hands??

@mssilvr I take a look at all followers’ boards before I follow back too; and typically follow individual boards rather than the entire “collection.” I’m also careful about what I repin; If it doesn’t link back to a website/blog or if the pinner doesn’t say “look at this photo I took and uploaded,” I generally don’t pin. I’ll frequently put a link to someone’s site in my comment too to help spread the word for someone.

I do expect the spammers, hackers and scammers to join the party soon though :(

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez @rich-brooks I haven’t had this specific experience, but the Chinese knock-off sites are out in full force on Pinterest. :( I’ve discovered dozens, and there are probably hundreds, of accounts that sign up through Twitter, (and have that generic profile pic), set up the same exact 5 boards (and not the generic ones suggested), then start pinning their counterfeit items. I’ve been reporting them, and having our vendors report them and file complaints against them since they are violating Pinterest’s copyright terms.

But yes *sigh* so sad something good has to go down this road.

  • I haven’t had this, but I do always check people out before I follow back. Guess it’s a good idea!

  • Mary and Rich, that’s true, they are everywhere. For now, it’s better to walk carefully, after I started getting all that kind of followers, my laptop got a weird, very weird disease, who knows if it could cause it. Renee, you have one more real follower in your accounts, it’s me. I guess your husband business can get a lot of advantage from pinterest, getting new ideas and sharing all his designs and projects when they are done. @marylarson, @reneestpeter, @rich-brooks

  • @mssilvr I’m on Pinterest, and I’m a real user! https://pinterest.com/kinchie/

Pinterest is the flavor of the month in social media, so the spammers and people who want to game the system are showing up in droves. Many of them are using automated tools (not Pinterest.com) to post things.

I have over 4,000 pins on just over 40 boards. I follow lots of board, more boards than people so I get things that are really customized to what I’m looking for.

It’s an interesting Pinterest world, eh?

  • Thanks @charlene-kingston ,

I enjoy looking at Pinterest, and also pin my business…but am very selective now on my pins, if they are not a pin friendly site (or w/o a pinterest logo on site) I stay away, the copyright law is very specific. It is wonderful that many artists have come to share  work and also big companies, makes it a lot easier to find recipes, home accessories, etc. Thanks to Social Media Examiner, we can share each other on different sites. I am trying to do that…when possible.

  • @mssilvr I think that is a smart philosophy. I very rarely pin something new. I mostly recycle pins. Mostly, I’m waiting to see how the copyright issues shake out over the next few months. And I don’t share any pins on Facebook, etc for the same reason. I may be too cautious, but I am careful with everything I do.

  • I agree @charlene-kingston, never hurts to be cautious. (sorry response took me sooo long :( time got away from me)
