Qs: Wordpress frameworks. What’s hot and what’s not! (12 posts)

  • I am trying to decide whether or not I need to purchase the Genesis framework or something else to develop a new website. I have Genesis running on one of my websites but I didn’t do the initial development, so don’t have a copy of the framework and child themes etc. Plus I wanted to know if there was something way cooler out there too. Any suggestions?

  • Cas we desperately need a new website but not about how to go about it and is wordpress okay to use? we are also looking at adding a shopping cart later down the trek??? Sorry not sure about Genesis….

  • @casmccullough I too use Genesis framework and it is has the best schematically laid out out-of-the-box set of WP themes available..bar none every SEO we tell you that one.
However, there are other alternatives (themes) that do cost some money that are very good. Where I shop is at theme forest for my themes and look at the changelogs see if the theme is being updates, look in the comments see problems what others are having. That will give you a clue as to any potential problems.
There are no free templates that you should consider as support is minimal (and you will need support), re-working some areas require you to understand .php.

  • @thereseroby @richbrooks owns a website development company. He might be able to help you. I’m sure there are other developers here too. Jess Kupfermann is on here too I think.

Wordpress is great, highly customisable and excellent for integrating social media.

@ptwylie thanks for your suggestions. I’ll check out theme forest and see what I find.

  • Genesis is highly recommended by a word press academy (sorry, can’t remember the teacher’s name). @casmccullough

  • I bought Genesis, but have not tried it out yet. I use Thesis to build both of my sites and a few others for clients. I like it, but I can see where Genesis will have more support with the power of Copyblogger Media behind it.

  • I’ve been trying the new Theme Blvd framework by Jason Bobich and it’s really nice and very easy to explain to my clients.

Customization is easy though the child themes he has already started for you. Each theme as comments that are quite extensive and he answers questions very quickly.

His themes are available on Themeforest or you can see the platform here  http://www.wpjumpstart.com/ .

  • @thereseroby

We do everything on WordPress. We don’t use Genesis or Thesis, though. (I’ve heard great things about both.)

Even if a client doesn’t want a blog, we build on WordPress. It’s just a fantastic CMS (content management system.)

And yes, there are plenty of e-com plugins. Our first choice is usually Shopp.

    Hope this helps!

  • @roguecitrus Dawn, Jumpstart looks great! Very clean!  @rich-brooks thanks for chiming in. Does that ecom plugin sit within your wordpress site or do you have to have a subdomain set up for another wordpress site? Just curious!

  • I have seen a lot of blogs/websites built with Genesis and have considered buying in the past. Currently I am working with Proframework and I absolutely love it. I have not had many issues and the few problems I did have, I received a quick response from the support theme. It’s also quite easy to work with and customize.

  • Great thanks @rich-brooks I think that is the way to go ….

  • I use Builder from ithemes. I like the layout editor feature and the fact they have a lot of child themes to choose from to get your started quickly and they are easily customized.
