QR Code Replacement? (8 posts)

  • This article on Mashable, http://on.mash.to/z762LG highlights a newer tecnology, MVS (mobile visual search) that seems to better “humanize” technology to deliver information. It is the author’s point in why QR codes won’t last.

    Has anyone experience with MVS?

  • This is a great insight to “what’s to come”. I am a HUGE advocate for everything Google. This is going to (eventually) revolutionize how we receive information.

Is there a social app out there that can scan a place for events? Example:

Johnny has a party and goes out to the front of his house and takes a picture. Next he uploads it to X and posts “The party is Here”. He then invites Gloria. Gloria has the same app, but Johnny lives in a crowded area and it’s difficult to find his house. By scanning the house Gloria can see that she has reached Johnny’s house using the MVS social site.

I don’t know about you, but when I use my GPS it puts me approximately 800 yards from my location. Do you know of anything like this?

  • Google goggles? this is crazy amazing! great link Joan, thanks for sharingI will have to see if I can download the app from itunes and give it a try

  • Yes, I have used that Goggles too and can find something by just point and click- doesn’t recognize everything but it is nice to have.. You do need a newer phone with 2.1 at least, tried my old motorloa cliq and it will not even find on the market.

QR codes are good if you have the right way of using them… they should go to a landing page and a mobile optimized site…if not the user will be very dissapointed. Issues with downloading an app to scan is can be eliminated if the manufactures or carriers of the phones would put that on each phone they sell, but alas they don’t in most cases.

  • My feeling is brand managers should be very interested in MVS due to the extremely low cost and high visibility of their products. No more QR codes to register and maintain. Just put your actual on display and people (aka potential buyers) can snap a pic and get all the cool details on it esp the reach to the social space for reviews and insights. The brand mgrs will love getting detailed analysis on the visual search and, of course, feedback from purchases. Ohhh, this is very cool technology.

  • Google Goggles is cool – you have to download the Google Search for Iphone however, if you can’t find that Click right here - if you enter your mobile phone number it will send you a text message with the direct link!  Pretty awesome – I really didn’t understand that I already had it on my Iphone -

So when I click on my BLUE Google Icon on my iphone, I get the sign In screen for Google – I just click on the APPS in the bottom of the screen

    Here are our choices:

    • Currents
    • Reader
    • Photos
    • YouTube
    • Translate
    • Goggles – there it is!!!!
    • Voice
    • Shopper
    • Earth
    • Latitude
    • Books
    • Tasks
    • Blogger
Sometimes It just works wonders for reading the fine print huh?  :-)))))  Watch the YouTube Video too – it is short and sweet and you will get a great view of what this is!

I love when people tell us they have the [fill-in-the-blank] killer. QR codes may not last, but the same can be said about email, text messaging, and the newspaper.

I’ll use whatever channels help me get to my ideal customers. If it’s QR codes, MVS, or smoke signals.

@travislodolinski: my suggestion is that Johnny texts Gloria his address. Boom. Done. :)

Keep in mind that all of these channels require expensive phones or other hardware. Make sure your ideal customer has his iPhone or her Google Goggles handy.

  • Thanks for this Joan, it seems the pace of innovation is still accelerating, and this wonderful ecology Mark has created is a magnificent addition to our ability to keep up.

It motivated me to an immediate post on my blog with which I communicate with those in my “patch” SME’s in and around the Australian food industry.

    Thanks Joan, and Mark!!
