Proxy Help – Ignorant damsel researcher needs ”block” protection (5 posts)

  • I have vague memories of routinely using proxies 20 years ago… Uhhh… things have changed… and only recently I’ve started getting blocked when doing research online.

Sometimes it’s just me typing really fast, searching, searching again and bam… blocked. Have to wait it out.

And although I’ve used lots of different software where most people use proxies, I never have and was never blocked.

Last week, I started using a YouTube/Google research tool and everything was fine till yesterday. Bam… Blocked! There’s an option to use proxies, but I’ve forgotten everything I ever knew about them, if I ever knew anything. How does a proxy help me avoid getting “blocked.” And why am I getting blocked? What’s the limit?

So what are they… how do you get them… how much are they… and since every major corporation I’ve ever done direct mail campaigns with ALWAYS used them, they must not be all bad, so I’m not opposed to them.

Any help? Education? Suggestions? Resources? Freebies? Etc?

  • @supereb Very cool! You always find the best stuff!

  • Hi @amyhallbiz

I am a fast reader and try to keep up with (geeky) trends.  My biggest problem is going back to find what I read yesterday or last week!  Since my browsing history gets erased after midnight each night, I have to keep track of where I’ve been by other means and I don’t always do that. Luckily my memory (althougth selective) is not too horrible. But then again some hectic days it’s hard to remember my name, you know? Sheesh.

  • @supereb

I know what you mean, Miss Eileen! One day you may just wake up and find that your name is reeeeeeeeeeeally Miss Elaine… like I keep screwing and calling you… lol!

But thankyou soooooo much for that Proxy Education! Talk about getting blocked… I posted the question and then haven’t been able to get logged back on SME’s site since then, lol. Oh, well… for some reason it finally took my password and here I am.

Thanks so much for sharing that brain of yours. What would the rest of us do without it?

    Robin Carlisle :)
