Posterous to shut down…why that’s important even if you don’t use it (3 posts)

Topic tags: Posterous, social media
  • I just saw on Twitter that Posterous is posed to shut down.

Although I have an account there, I never really used it much, and always seemed to post things elsewhere as well.

If you never used it, you may not think that’s important, but it’s a reminder that when we use someone else’s platform, we’re always at their mercy.

You should always be developing your content on a platform you control, like your blog or website. Social media is a great tool for engagement and driving traffic, but always remember that YOU DON’T OWN IT!

There’s a nice post explaining how you can back up or move your posterous content here: http://agbeat.com/social-media/posterous-shuts-down-in-april-how-to-back-up-your-account/

Did you ever use Posterous? What do you think the next social media platform to shut down will be?

  • Hi @rich-brooks

Like you I was there but never really used the site.

The next to shut down?  I don’t know as I keep pretty much to the mainstream and I don’t see any of the big 4 getting ready to close their doors.  I do check into some of the smaller sites but they don’t hold a lot of value for me, or much interest either.

We are in the same boat on ‘owning your own’ and how best to keep your online business healthy.

  • Hey, I’m with yall. Own it or lose it… Digital sharecropping is just too risky.
