pinterest…its bugging me… (11 posts)

  • i have a  big    business project  in mind…involving  pinterest….i will need to put some prices on   some posts…. well,,, pinterest rules   says  no  business and   also has a gift  category   where you  can put  prices and links   to where to  buy your  item……now  how  can you  fit   those 2   things into  one   view of pinterest?

i just hate   these  grey  areas….   pinterest is  huge for  me and  the store, over  1000 followers  ,,,i do not want to do anything against the rules….. and  my new idea  needs a pinterest  board  with prices and a link to our  etsy…… dang!!!  has anyone   heard any updates or  clarifications on this?

The TOS says no commercial purposes, except any permission granted by Pinterest. You’re already violating the terms according to the info you’ve provided, but you’re not alone. Russell’s violating the terms as well. Is seeing the price on pinterest really that crucial to consumers? You could use the pinned image’s link back to link to your store, but that’s a TOS violation. What’s wrong with the gift category? People are always looking for gifts.

As for myself, after reading the suitable content section, I’m not sure I would want to use Pinterest because they can “deem” any content they want as unsuitable. My company name alone is a potential TOS violation.

Getting permission from Pinterest to do what you want to do as described above is another option.

  • @krmcgee…OH DEAR,  WEll i dont see any  enforcing of  that  TOS, yet…lol……….. the  gift  category all has prices and is  totally about   selling on line..it totally links  to the owners  selling  spot….its all about ACTUAL  busness transactionis  STARTING  on pinterest…and in the total open….

…  i never heard of the permission  part.,so thanks, i will look again………its pretty obvious  the  TOS  you have in  mind is not in  use….but  you never know it  could  be sometime…thats what i dont like…..

i forgot to mention, pinterest put on a webinar a few months  ago   about how to sell on pinterest….. with  some wink winks….

  • Actually, pinterest isn’t intended to be for commercial use in general, but you can put prices on items, and  as soon as you do, they’ll be listed in the gifts category as well as your own boards.

All you have to do is to put a price, using the dollar sign in the description of the image and you’ll automatically get a banner at the top with the price.

Then what you do (you probably know this part) is open up the pin again, clicking edit, and you’ll see a url box, and that’s where you link to wherever you’re selling your product.

    It’s all legit, too.

    hope this helps,  Margie

  • @margiemintz thanks margie.,  i already   know how to do it….my worry  was  more about the   contradictions/the  MURKY rule  about not  doing  business on  pinterest…and  the  guy above  said  you have to get permission…i  couldnt  find  that…  i guess the  actual  business is  done on  another  site….

..  so theres nothing to worry about?  great!!! ..

p.s.  i found  your  boards….  really nice….im one of  your  followers  now!!

  • @annfurnivall, Ann, I think there is nothing to be worry about, on their terms, point 4 b they talk about different user accounts, and they talk about Companies, organizations or other entity. But as everything they have to be register for a person to respond for the account. In the beginning I read the same about not to do business, but probably it was from a blog and not from Pinterest. Also they modified their rules last April.

  • @hildaalanisgonzalez thanks  hilda…im  going with that….obviously they are allowing  all kinds of  business on there…

i see  you  dont put your prices on everything…….thats   kind of where i am too…i  hate to have priced  things from others  on  my  boards..

  • The current TOS was last modified on March 23, 2012.

You can find the “permission” clause here: http://pinterest.com/about/use/

I know of at least one person outside of SME that’s using the service for business, so yes, pinterest doesn’t seem to be enforcing their own TOS. I prefer to avoid breaking the TOS; that way, I’m protected while you aren’t  Plus it’s funner to hack the system without breaking rules.

I’ve figured out how to do what you wanted to do: link + price on a pinned image, without breaking the TOS. I’ll post a link here as a kind of tutorial when I’m ready to launch.

  • @krmcgee thanks  …i  saw  that….  pinterest has a whole section  for  business…the  gift  section….

now im  trying to  decide  whether to put prices on  my   items …i dont  care for that on my   boards when i repin…..but it  does  get   you in the  gift  section…

i have a big  new project  starting  involving pinterest and want to  get the  bugs out  before  committing a lot of time….

  • @annfurnivall

Yes, we’ve already discussed the gift section, which of course goes against pinterest’s own TOS. But that does give you place to put priced items without worrying about violating any rules. If it were me, I’d put some items in the gift section because people are always looking for gifts and I’d have items without prices as well. Prices on everything might be a turn off for viewers.

My hack will launch my pinterest presence, as well as launch a new blog, and of course, show how to circumvent the TOS without violating it.
