Online Course Creation (18 posts)

  • Does anyone have experience with Udemy.com to create online courses? I am interested in knowing the learning curve and if there are any “gotchas” before I go down that path.

I can probably use Captivate to handle most of my needs, but to buy is fairly expensive for a small biz, although they do have a monthly fee w/ annual “membership” option.

But, I am not absolutely sure at this time how much I will use it–my plan varies between 4-8 training courses during the coming year, at varying price points.

So if Udemy’s free capabilities are robust enough and relatively easy to use it might be a good starting point.

    Any thoughts or personal experience?

  • they contacted my wife and asked her to put together a series. the bad thing was that they wanted her to create and market the material and only earn 35% of the sales.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani I don’t recall the pricing but there is BrightTalk and Slideshare (free). And just did a quick search (b/c I don’t have my work webinar spreadsheet in front of me which included a few).

  • @kc_kreative I will check out the google article. I already use slideshare to a point, but want a bit more functionality (I think).

  • @joanmuschampfagnani if you want to put together a course it is best to do it on your own steam a great place to learn how to do that from start to finish is the
    A-List Blogging Community
which costs only $20 a month and they have a wealth of information as well as an amazing community. You can cancel at anytime if you not satisfied, but trust me it is worth it.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani I don’t have experience with Udemy.com but I have experienced Captivate courses a lot for the programs I work with. Captivate is wonderful if you can justify the cost and use cases. I LOVE Slideshare, but you are right in that you may need to go outside to gain functionality. However I do recommend sharing back into Slideshare in the process.

  • @alexandrabriggs Thanks. It is a tough choice, although the online version does offer a lower initial investment. I will keep on searching for other tools that really give more functionality. But, perhaps if I plan a full series of courses that can go into Captivate, I can justify the 12 month commitment for the online version. It’s a lot easier to justify $240 than $900, especially if I am able to develop multiple courses to spread the investment.

As usual, lots of great tips and feedback here. :)

  • Hello everyone,
This thread has been very useful to me as a budding consultant as it gives me ideas for creating courses for prospective clients.  Thanks, everyone, for the great information.

  • great question, Joan. You got some great answers. Why don’t you re-post with your decision @joanmuschampfagnani

  • Hi folks,

I was also asked to create a course for Udemy recently.  I also see the possibility for a series.  I accepted, and as of today I have been assigned a “course creation specialist” to assist me.  We are targeting a late December release at this point.

I would be happy to share my experience here if you are interested.

    cheers,

    Pete

  • I just created a membership site to run my course. Isn’t that the simplest way to go about it? You can build your own brand and ask affiliates to help you promote.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani Thanks for this great thread – Have you made a decision or progress? I will be interested in hearing feedback from you & @petertrapasso on your projects. Hope they are going well!

  • @cjrivard I accepted and am now working on my course draft outline!

@elizabeth-jamieson I would love to hear more about your course, membership site, and promotion plan!

    cheers,

    Pete

  • @petertrapasso – what is your course about? Or can’t you say?

Mine is a WordPress coaching membership, and I have just set up an affiliate program for it. So at the moment that is my marketing plan, plus of course, word of mouth.

  • Awesome @elizabeth-jamieson Liz!

Mine is about social media optimization and how I went from being unknown a year ago to rubbing shoulders with some of the top Social Media experts.

Still working out the promotion side.  I am making a list of ideas.

    cheers,

    Pete

  • @cjrivard I am currently testing Start Meeting, as it seems to also provide the ability for screen sharing and recording. This might mean having a reasonable small web group online, which I use for my group sessions, as well as the potential to directly record trainings.

I am testing to learn limitations of both.

  • Hiya Joan @joanmuschampfagnani

Just thinking outside the box here – have you considered offering your courses through an online university?  Here is one to get you started down a different path, if you might want to consider this.

  • @supereb It might be a possibility, but typically my classes are specific topics and elements and not long term programs. They tend to focus on the practical and specifics of a hands-on training. A quick scan appears the topics are far higher level than what I am doing, which tells me it is likely not for my target market.

But, thank you– I need to spend a bit more time nosing around to see what it might have that i don’t see at first quick glance.
