Old website info in search results (8 posts)

  • I have just recently updated a client’s website. I restructured the site by creating new menu items and deleting old ones and I have written totally new content. The URL stayed the same.

Now, when searching for the site in Google, the search result still shows text from the old pages. When clicking on the link, it goes to a page that is not existing anymore since I removed that menu item. I get the error message that I’m ‘not authorized to see this content’.

I have already deleted cookies etc, but no change in behaviour. Is there a certain time period that needs to pass for Google to scan the new content and overrule the old one? Does anyone know how often Google scans the web for updates?

Or could it be that the old content is still showing up because I did not delete the old pages but they’re just hidden. Google should not be bringing up hidden pages, right?

  • Hi Claudia.  This has happened to me many times!  It can take a while for the Google bot to recrawl (is there such a word? – There is now!!)) the site.  I’ve known my old pages stay in the search results for over a week but usually the site’s updated within a couple of days.  I think you’ll find everything will be okay when it’s picked up the new content and changes you’ve made.

  • Thanks for your quick response, Ros. I will be a bit more patient then ;-)

It just happened to be one of the rare questions I’ve had experience of!!  I don’t know if it will help if you try to “Fetch Google Bot” in Webmaster Tools (f the client’s registered the site there) but probably best to be patient!

  • @claudiapoeckl @rosg

You can wait for Google to re-index your website or you can take advantage of their “remove URL’s” section within Webmaster Tools. You can also view any pending requests.

Login to your Webmaster Tools account (If you don’t have one, sign up.)Look to left hand sidebar navigation.Optimization > Remove URL’s > Create new removal request

    Cheers!
    Jules
