  • Hello @keith-chopping

One of the most important things to learn is the use of #hashtags - http://twitter.pbworks.com/w/page/1779812/Hashtags
Once you know how to use hashtags you’ll be on your way to knowing the best trick to finding quality content and making your tweets go farther.

I agree with @supereb that you can find people with related interested by using and finding hashtags.
There are plenty of different purposes for twitter. One might be to find industry leaders or influencers. Often, bloggers you like will have links to their twitter accounts, and you can follow them easily that way.
You can also check out websites like wefollow.com to find people who are local, or are leaders in your industry, or are your ideal customers.
Here’s a recent article that I wrote for SME called 4 Ways to Grow a Twitter Following That Matters, which goes into a little more detail, and has links to other free articles that can help.

  • Thanks Helena , Eileen and Rich.  Your help is much appreciated and I am grateful that you have taken the time to help me out with some good advice.

my best wishes to all of you

  • I agree. Hashtags are important to learn and follow protocol. I see #people #hashtagging #every #word #sometimes. They surely do not know what they are doing!

  • Hi @bob-green

I agree, some folks overdo a good thing and turn it into a very “spammy” tweeting habit.

Used carefully and religiously though, hashtags are the key to doing business with twitter.

  • I love how one can pick up jewels in every thread on SME!

  • @keith-chopping Hubspot has some great Twitter books — free for giving them your info :)

Hmm…I just did a search on them and found this page: http://www.hubspot.com/twitter-marketing-hub/ which I will have to bookmark myself.

Hashtags are important as everyone already mentioned. They help you follow trends and find thought leaders (sometimes). You need to start conversations with people on topic or off. For example, I chat with my virtual buddy, Robert (@fondalo) about social media (He owns @BundlePost) and coffee (even though I prefer tea). It’s just as if I hung out with him IRL (in real life) as a casual friend.

  • Search the subjects you are interested in via hashtags or a simple search.

Retweet if you agree with them, respond if you have something to add.

Follow the people who you admire and/or you feel can help you in your business.

Share tips and advice for those who are asking questions about your expertise.

Follow the trends to relate to people outside of just what you do.

If there is an event, tweet about it and see what others are saying in real time.

Follow your favorite artists, politicians, authors, and athletes.

Find your friends to see what they are saying.

    Be interactive.

Ask the people you are connected with to recommend you to their followers.

I hope this helps.  I could tell you more but I have to charge you lol.

  • Thanks to all ofyou for your tips and advice -there’s obviously so much more to Twitter than meets the eye.

    best wishes

    Keith
