  • First off, welcome! Glad to have you in the Small Business Club.

In case you missed them on the home page, here are some essential links:

    • Getting Started Guide: This will teach you everything you need to know about starting a topic, responding, making tax-free donations to your club leader and other important tasks.
    • Club Rules: The first rule about Small Business Club is you you don’t talk about Small Business Club. Oh, wait, that’s a different club. Bottom line is no affiliate links, no self-promotion. For all the details you need, be sure to check out the club rules. We want to have great, helpful conversations and we’re serious about keeping it hype-free.

And, if you have any questions, please feel free to send me or one of our moderators (we’re at the top of every page!) a message.

    Thanks!

  • What a silly boy! You are way too funny — always! And I especially recommend all our club members go take a little looksee at just how clever and cute and funny our dear Club Leader can be on his own site, while still producing enormous amounts of expertise and tremendous value for his clients. Personally, I most especially enjoyed your disclaimer or privacy page or something like that — way too funny! Irreverently useful.

Thanks also for this helpful little forum topic. I think it will go a long way toward having a place to direct people with their questions that don’t quite fit the forum topic at hand.

  • Thanks, @atlantarobin!

I discovered a long time ago that if you get the audience laughing they can’t aim their tomatoes.

  • Do tomatoes come with this club? My husbands hates them, and says that everyone who eats tomatoes dies. I don’t agree. I work in the natural health field, and love tomatoes. I’d never throw them.

Well, that’s my way of introduction. Nice to meet you, Robin & Rich.

Rich: I loved your presentation the other day. Terrific content – thanks!

  • @rich-brooks Tax free donations to your club leader eh! Hmm….interesting. Is it tax free if sent from Australia also? LOL  ;)

I am not sure whether you get tomatoes or not @lyndagoldman-copywriting.

I ate them almost every day when I travelled around Australia. I was 20 years old and on a strict budget! When I came home I couldn’t eat them for 6 months. I was just tomatoed out.

I got over it and have been munching tomatoes for a number of years. I’m still alive.

Nice to meet you all as well :)

  • i have a question about becoming     FRIENDS on here…..  i appreciate  being  asked  but   whats  the benefit?   …would  they  be on our  facebook page?

so if anyone asked me and i  didnt  respond  ..i  want to  be  your cyber friend..but maybe not  formally…lol..

  • I also have wondered what the benefit of ‘Friens’ are within the forum. I’m on number forums, and yet to fully get it. I figured as long as they don’t respond real negative and nasty, then they’re my friend. :)Glad to be part of the friendship here…Kevin Katz

  • Coming in late to the party, apparently.  Nice to meet all of you.

I love tomatoes, but you don’t have to worry about any being thrown from this direction. I make a lot of sauce with them instead! You’re all welcome for dinner any time – hope you like Italian.

Looking forward to joining the discussions here.  Thank you so much @rich-brooks for giving up your time to facilitate!

  • Happily retired and decided to open a coffee/gelato shop on Sanibel Island just off SW Florida coast. Work is hard, economy is bad and I look for ways to promote business without print media. I love learning things and it’s a pleasure to be in the presence of people who apparently understand this stuff and can express themselves without the insider jargon normally employed by computer people.

  • Welcome Paul, you have made a great choice.  You will be busy just keeping up with the great content…Best of luck with your shop…

  • Retired professional educator… Miss the instrinsic rewards of my 20-year tenure in my professional career, but life happens. In my case, a very special gift of life -a six organ transplant. Honoring my donor as a Donate Life Ambassador…

Overjoyed to be a stay-at-home nana and to own/build my own multi-level marketing skincare company. I, too, am a lifelong learner, so I am looking forward to learning more from my peers in this club.

  • Hello Everyone. I started a marketing company to help the local businesses in my area. Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, USA.  Bad economy and not many of these local companies know how to get noticed online. I needed a job so I started a company! I also grow and sell vegetables, tomatoes included. If you need some for whatever reason, see me about August. Glad to be here, looking forward to learning what I can and then passing it on to others.

  • My name is Yolanda Williams. I am formulating a membership organization for women in business; 1 year in this month. (YAY!!!)  I am a social entrepreneur, meaning a portion of the membership organization’s proceeds will support Literacy. I am very excited about the opportunities of “membership” in such a forum. Definitely looking forward to learning and connecting on purpose with everyone, so I can share with others start-ups that I encounter on my entrepreneurial journey.

  • Hello everyone,

Glad to be here. Wish to know some pointers on social media marketing that’s why I’m here. As for my business it offers mostly eBook and software downloads on almost any topic from internet marketing  to setting up your very own solar panels to health and fitness guides.

    @Marketcb

  • Hey Everyone,

Glad to be a part of SME and the fine clubs that are currently in place.  I have always been of the entrepreneurial mind set.  I think it really started years ago when I was just a young pup.  My dad would be listening to cassette tapes of Zig Ziglar and other motivational speakers when he was in Amway and there have  always been two significant statements that stood out in my mind all my life.“What the mind can conceive the body can achieve” and (the best one I use on my clients) “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always have what you have today”
Anyway, hope to make some great connections here as well as expand my knowledge.
    Thanks and God Bless

  • Hi All

So rich can we have to link to your website?   I’d love to check it out.  So now I’d like to promote myself first he he he he.  Seriously!  I’ can’t wait to hook up with all of you.  I recently dicovered something interested.  while it’s good to chat with friends on Facebook, which I don’t do alot.  It’s even better to get messges and updates from friends at e.g. SME.  Don’t get me wrong, friends have their benefits, but not all of them think like we do, BUSINESS, and certain friends will always keep you in the loop.  Anway, you all have a pleasant day.

  • Hi everyone … I’m new to this forum and SME in general.  I work as a marketing coordinator for a company that makes photograph accessories and this year started my own marketing business to help other small companies with their social media … Marketing Connections Plus.

I am looking forward to learning more info for me, the company I work for as well as my clients and this entire site seems to have a lot of valuable info as do a lot of the pages/people who participate.
    Glad to be here!

  • @rich-brooks I visited your website and love how easy and not overwhelming it is to use. Thanks for all of the great resources!

@jeangriffin I can only imagine how much you must appreciate the small (and truly significant and important) things in life that most people don’t even notice. I have a chronic illness, a two-year-old daughter and a company I am trying to run with my husband. The things I have recorded on video or photos during my daughter’s life seemed natural like anyone would do the same. Apparently I was just noticing the small things more than my peers! That’s one way I stay positive and feel lucky to be in the situation I am in.

Like @jeangriffin I am also a lifelong learner. I can’t wait to learn as much as I can from this group, and hopefully contribute just as much!

  • @Emily Priddy Each moment of every day and night is a blessing -a gift. I definitely take the time to smell the roses, to catch the snowflakes on my tongue, to giggle with my grandchildren, to tromp through muddy puddles -all things love, laughter, life, and God’s blessings. I know you understand what it means to have a chronic illness, while all the time staying upbeat, strong, courageous, and driven. God bless you, my new friend. I probably have 10,000 times the photos of my family and friends than others may have, because that IS my normal -to capture each moment’s delight. I hope we can find ways to support one another as both professionals and new personal friends. Heading to check out your profile now. Please check out my business page and send referrals my way if you know of someone for whom my business may be the “perfect match”. I will do the same for you -try to support your business in any way that I can. I certainly miss my passion -teaching and all things professional educator and administrator, but I am finding new ways to be a blessing in others’ lives each day. Sometimes my physical body says, “no”, but my heart always says, “GO!” https://jeancrawford.myrandf.bizI highly recommend our skin care line to all who have skin -both men and women. Try out the personalized solution tool on my .com website. You’ll love it. Pass it along to all you know. Each person who uses the tool will know exactly what Doctors Rodan and Fields would tell them him or her what they need -as if they have an appointment with the doctors. I’ll get emails from all who try it. I’ll be giving away a wonderful full-size Essential or Enhancement product at the end of April to someone who tries the solution tool and becomes a preferred customer. Woohoo! Who doesn’t like FREE? https://jeancrawford.myrandf.com/Pages/OurProducts/GetAdvice/SolutionsToolI am doing all that I can do to rebuild my family’s financial future, as all loved me through my health crisis and the transplant surgery nearly bankrupt us all. Trying to build from the beginning again. One day at a time. I have huge confidence in this business. Here’s to building strong!

  • Hi,
I am Asif Memon, I am little bit confused that which small business I start, I have 8 years experience in social work and I have promoted many people on facebook, but yet still i have been unable to earn any money, so need suggestions that which small business I can start according to my expertise.

  • Hi Asif;  suggest that you start by doing research in the area of social work, as that is where you seem to have expertise.

Start with a SEO competitive analysis in your area of specialty to see if you can find a niche that is not dominated.

    Good Luck

  • I am new!  This may be a silly question but how do you @mention people within the forums so they are sent notifications when mentioned?

  • Recently joined and looking forward to meeting people.

  • Hello!  I am Gina Curtis.  I am the director of marketing and business development for a specialty doctors’ office.  My main focus has been B2B to increase referral patterns for the practice.  I am NEW at social media and I look forward to learning a lot!

  • Hey Everybody!

I am the owner of Mojo Foxx LLC, a Mississippi web design studio. I’ve been constructing web sites for quite a while but recently moved to a new location, changed the business name, and pretty much threw out all of the “old” and embarked on a bit of blue ocean strategy. There is a lot I dislike about the web design business so I decided to attempt a total re-invent. Thus far it’s working well, I can’t seem to find the time to complete my own web site! I am interested in what other “outside-the-box” thinkers have to share. So here I am…a new member of the club. I’m looking forward to discussions. Don’t be shy, feel free to offer advice, unique ideas and, of course, criticism.

  • I am the owner of Just Face It Media. After 3 years providing social media marketing for the Hallmark store where I worked, I decided to start my own business. Really loving it, but still have a lot to learn. I am amazed at the amount of free information that is out there to get. This is an awesome site! Thank you so much.

  • Hi All,

My name is MichèLe – and tho I am an avid reader of my Social Media newsletter, I’ve never been a part of the forums. So this is something completely new! I just joined the Facebook forum a couple days ago, and now I am joining this one. After reading a couple pages, I figured I could ‘plug’ myself too – being everyone else is doing it!

I’ve been in the graphic design business since 1998 when I created a brochure for the university branch I was attending back then for their computer facilities for students. I even made them a “page” on their web hosting-space explaining the ins and outs for new students, current students and faculty – which is also the first time I made a website. After that I worked in-house for few organizations usually creating advertisements and catalogs for merchandise for B2B and B2C. On the side, I kept up the graphic/print/writing marketing on the side as well as website creations. My “side” work sometimes became my job when companies had to start downsizing. (Phooey to that! but at the same time maybe a blessing in disguise?)

So recently I started back to school – first I was going for the official “web design degree” being those were non-existent the first time around, but now I am looking at Integrative Studies – because I can take everything I already know, add want I want to know and put it toward one degree – which is really awesome… otherwise, I’ll be in school forever!! (LOL!).

While in school I had a chance to work for an excellent company – though it only ended up being for 6 months – I’d have liked to stay much longer. Such a great learning opportunities they give to their regular designers! So now I’m trying this on my own as a full-time work @ home office business, instead of just a “side” business. My business name is A2Z Marketing, Social Dezygn and Victorious Dezygn Solutions. A2Z is the original name, but some just don’t get it so I added the additional Social Dezygn that way the now understand I do that too and Victorious Dezygn Solutions was basically for web design – I started that with my cousin, but then she dropped out when she found a grand opportunity – don’t blame here there – when something comes available that is just an opportunity of a lifetime – you just should take it!

Also I am thinking of marketing my other hobbies to make and sell, as I am not only an avid with marketing, websites and all that, but also with gardening – my garden grows each year, and I try different things each year as well as trying different products from different retailers to assist in keeping my garden organic and healthy – which then provides me with organic foods that are healthy for me and my family. I got a huge compiled list of what works & what doesn’t, what to buy from whom and when..etc.

Plus I make jewelry and lip balm gloss, oil based parfums, and massage oils –  which is under the other business called Elemental Treasures  . Oh – and not to forget my other hobby arts’ – painting & drawing on mediums (canvas, rice paper, denim) as well as and crochet, knitting and sewing… which is under CheleArts.

Hobbies come third next to business contact growing and possible clients to grow my business with – then family… which is nieces, nephews, siblings and cats.

So nice to meet all of you!

  • Hi, my name is Janet and I am so happy to have a place to go to find the information I will need for the long haul with my new businesses. I launched It Happens in Alabama.com in January 2012 and have since received 2 Worldwide “Who’s Who” awards for it. In 2 weeks I will Launch The Best in Montgomery.com. I have alot of questions on completing my country wide expansion plans with IHIA and my statewide plans with TBIM. Any help is GREATLY appreciated!

  • Hello everyone I am new to the concept of social media. In a hospital environment, most do not have a need for social media. Staying current with trends in medicine and knowledge of new procedures and drugs has been my priority. Blogging and Wordpress is new to me, but I am looking forward to learning about social media and its role in our world today. Thank you for your patience should my questions be elementary.

  • Hello.  I’m new to this group and the club in general, but have been following Social Media Examiner on FB for awhile now.  I launched my business http://www.sourcinghandmade.com in Feb. 2012, and am here to learn tips and insights on how to maximize social media to grow my small biz.  Thanks in advance!

  • Hello! My gosh, it took forever to scroll to the bottom of this list of fun folks! I am new, duh…and always looking to stay up on the trends and how-tos for this social media industry. Especially in making a business out of this.

I’ve been doing SM for about 3 years, but as a business only 1 year. Learned a ton of stuff, and have a few clients currently. Getting ramped up for more business is my goal, of course. I am known as Social Focus by CG as my company, but personally as Cheryl Gnad. I am found on Twitter and Facebook by those names too.

I’m trying to get up to speed on everything I can do to help get us going strong, and hopefully make some money doing it.I was the “5000 th Person” to sign up-does that make me special?

  • Hi my name is Bill and I run a printing company in the New York area. We have just launched our website & Facebook page and like everyone else looking for ways to best promote. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

  • Hello Everyone, Bob and Kimber here…
Bob and I believe life is a journey, you never know exactly where you will end up or how you will get there. As our 4 children were growing we were inspired to adopt, we have been blessed with a sibling set of 3 and a sibling set of 2 bringing our family to 9 children.  Our last 5 children are very high needs with mental, behavioral and physical challenges.  It became apparent that I would need to be a full time work from home mom with the flexibility to support our children’s needs.  Social Media and Marketing presented me with a huge learning curve so I continue to look to the people and groups like this for my ongoing education.
The wireless industry is used by millions of people and we wanted a small % of that market… why… because it is a renewable and necessary service… Lightyear Wireless is the only company that offered an average person like us the opportunity to start a business and receive our monthly wireless service for free.
Now as Vice Presidents with Lightyear Wireless, we have seen that people are beginning to see the power and importance of owning their own business.  We enjoy helping customers start and receive their service for free as well as assisting entrepreneurs’ in starting their own online wireless business with the residual income from the wireless bills.
Bob and I look forward to meeting you on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and all the other social sites…

  • Hi All! I just joined the marketing department of a small company with big technology designed to make healthcare more efficient.  Part of my job here is “Social Media Coordinator,” handling our LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook accounts, plus I’ll soon be launching a blog.

Previously I worked at a daily newspaper as the Digital Media Manager, where I successfully launched and managed the paper’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well managed reader-submitted blogs via Wordpress.

I’ve got a good base of knowledge I hope to share, but I’m also looking forward to learning from the experience of everyone here — especially how to take what I know of the world of newspaper social media and apply it in a B2B sense.

  • Hi everyone!  Happy to be here, to meet everyone, and to be a part of this small business marketing club!

I work for a national health savings accounts administrator, where I’m responsible for all things relating to marketing, web development, social media, blogging, etc.

I’m really looking forward to both helping and learning from everyone here!

  • Hello Everyone. I’m Andrea the Newbie. New to the club, but not social media. In my personal life, I’m a social media addict. So I decided to take the addiction, coupled with my passion for public relations and started my business, VoiceofAndrea Publicity focusing on the premise that by gaining publicity for the “person” behind the business or product, it will produce a ROI.  My specialty is entrepreneurs/solopreneurs and the entertainment industry (I have a Masters of Science Entertainment Business).  I’m here to learn from the experts and network.  My motto – Shine|Get Noticed|Get Recognized.
    @voiceofandrea TwitterVoiceofAndrea – Facebook

  • Hello Everyone, I’m Joanne – new to the club and site and a half and half user of social media platforms -not an addict, although I might become one having read all your posts! I am a Research writer and qualified Environmental Health Officer (EHO) UK profession with a BSc Hons Degree in Environmental Health and management qualifications.

My expertise is working with sole traders and small businesses , some larger companies to research knowledge topics to aid creative thought development and keep business up to date. Looking to connect with more experienced business owners to share and develop the business and share knowledge with experts ….and to keep informed of changes in the social media world! looking forward being part of the club.

  • Hi everyone.
I just joined and just read the intro’s from the club leaders… So to tie it all back in, tomatoes are your friend, as I would like to be! But [being English by birth] I’d appreciate it if you could all pronounce it properly, it’s “Tomato” not “Tomato.” Cheers! ;-)

Oh, BTW of a brief, but not-at-all-self-promotional introduction, I have been a “traditional” marketer since the Roman era (under slave rule by corporate America) but was liberated in 2010 to start my own marketing agency and have been enjoying the freedom to express (gulp) personality & (shudder) humor at will ever since! Oh, and I have been an avid fan and user of social media for the past 3 – 4 years, and was recently “certified” as a Social Specialist by the folks over at Splash Media U.

Life is good. Hoping it will get even better through networking with you all!

    Looking forward to connecting!Sam :-)

  • Hello everyone, this seems like a really fun group to belong to!

Any advice for newbies? I have had a few friend requests but I have a question about this practice and would like to hear how everyone handles it.

I get friend requests here and every other social site, now my question is this, WHY? I always accept then follow up with a thank you email for connecting and never do I hear from most and the ones I do hear from I only get that one and only email back. What is the purpose of this practice? I just don’t get it. Any ideas?

  • Hi!  My name is Ginny Howell and I am a tour operator, HG Tours Inc., dba Ginny Howell Tours.  Been in business for 20 years.  I have really gotten into the social media and am always trying to find ways to keep in touch with my customers.  I’m known in the business for being “innovative” in my marketing approach.  My latest venture has been Pinterest.  I want to learn how to get my customers from the various forms of social media to buying.  Allot of them tell me they follow me on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and now Pinterest, but they never respond.  How do you get them engaged.  I think the one thing I let slide is my Blog – just not enough time.  http://www.ginnyhowelltours.com

  • Hi Ginny, I recently wrote an article about this very subject and trying to get fans more engaged Here is a link. I hope it helps you gain more ideas :) http://liketosharepages.com/social-networking/face-book-fan-page-promotion/so-you-have-a-fan-page-now-what/

  • OMGoodness I am so overwhelmed with information! This is such a brilliant site, thank you. If only my knowledge could be shared – I am such a newbie :)

  • Food and business?

Starting and running a highly successful business. Now the often question asked is, how difficult is it to start and run a business in this competitive market? The results often lead to question of resources; does one have the necessary resources?

People often mistook resources to capital, machinery, workers, equipment, etc.  Yes these resources are imperative to one’s business to start operating   but the question in mind is, how often people put emphasis on resources such as network as a resource and other intangible resources such as skill of mind, proficient knowledge (information), negotiating and innovation.

I always compare business to food when advising people who are clueless or have been in the industry but struggling to get their business up and running.

When preparing a meal or baking for the first time, what do you do? You first think about what exactly you want to make, what exactly you want to bake and then ask around, often ask somebody closest to you or whom you trust will perhaps give the right ingredients for you to make the right meal.

With enough sufficient information (ingredients), the chances of you having to reach the determined outcome are always certain and accurate and more accurate when you have expect next to you leading you all the way.

When you finish baking the cake even people outside the house don’t need to ask if you’re baking or not but will of cause smell those deliciously baked cakes from outside. In business with the right pulling strategies in your business in place, people will know about the business or product without you having to go out there and spending thousands and thousands in marketing the product.

It’s what you put in the cake you’re baking that gets people’s attention for the cake you’re baking, it’s the flavor that gives people that attention that triggers their thought making them crave for those biscuit (cakes) you’re baking, so as for the business.

It’s my first article, still raw material but is it okay if I use a metaphor when making comparisons of starting a  business and preparing a meal?

Any extra tomatoes – send them my way.  I’ve just about plucked all of the ripe ones out of my garden.  It is going to just about kill me to have to go back to buying them in the store….they just don’t taste the same.  lol

  • HI All,I’m new to this group but not new to the site.  I’ve been reading up on material from here for over a year.  I teach social media in the veterinary medicine world so I have to stay fresh and on top of things :)  I’m looking forward to interacting with everyone! I have lots to learn and ideally will be able to share some insight at times too.

  • Hi everyone,

New to this forums world, not sure of how it all works but I’m wearing my scout badge with excitement and ready to learn about social media to help my business.

I’m a graphic artist and currently studying jewellery design in Adelaide, Australia. Just recently I started a jewellery online store and I’m happy that this forums exist so we can learn tips about growing our business and make new friends.

Looking forward to know more about you all :)

  • Hi Everyone, I’m Ken and I’ve just joined the Club after listening to Michael’s SME’s new Podcast.

Based in the UK, I’ve run a small retail online sports equipment business( http//:www.crazykennys.com ) since the year 2000.Being in a niche (Hockey) market, business is seasonal, i.e. Winter/Fall and I find myself constantly working “In my business” instead of “On it”I’d love to be able to “Splash the Cash” and hire a marketing company for all my Social Media marketing needs, but the bank balance won’t allow it.

So, I’m here to learn new tips, tricks and anything else that will help my business grow and if I can contribute using my many years of business experience to help others too – even better.

BtwI love tomatoes, preferably on my chips/fries from a ketchup bottle.

  • Hi people…

    I have learned a lot from everyone’s responses…

    Regards from Costa Rica…

    Néstor Alfaro…

  • I am just an old guy, retired, and starting a site, realizing that I know next to nil about sites, blogging, promotion, social media and related. lol One thing that I do know is. I really like this site and the knowledge that it provides by the hour, I am amazed by the talent of the people in here. I did find the basket of mushy tomatoes but I am still hunting for the tax deductible donation remittance form…  Have a great day, everyone.! daveM

  • Aprendiendo cada día de todos sus ejemplos y consejos.Muchas gracias por la amistad que me han brindadoEl progreso se obtiene sobre la facilidad de llegar al conocimiento

  • Im just here to make friends. Boy that is a lame sentence isn’t it? Ok how about this one then: A stranger is only a friend who has not tied you up yet…I did do stand up comedy professionally in the late 80s (89) early 90s. No one every threw a tomato BUT they did hurl heckles! So if you found me somewhat amusing, do send a friend request; I sincerely believe that a true friend is a couch to sleep on in times of trouble….

  • Hi. Wow there is a lot to check out on this site. I am the media sales person for a local newspaper for my full time job. My passion is my “other” job as co-owner of a bicycle store in Washington.

I have just enough knowledge in social media marketing to get myself into trouble and I’m looking for ways to do just that.

My goal is to be out of my full time job in 2.5 years and selling bikes full time. I’m really looking forward to the group and what everyone has to offer.
