New Feature Gets a Big Thumbs Up from Me…You? (10 posts)

  • This morning/yesterday the crack team of technicians added the ability to thumbs up or down comments in the Clubs!

I think this is a great addition, as very often I just want to let people know I appreciate their .02.

Likewise, for people who are just shamefully self-promoting their services, it’s a chance for the community to give a “friendly” thumbs down.

As far as I know, there’s no experience points awarded for either the thumber or the thumbee (help me come up with better names!), but there’s still the value of creating a better networking atmosphere.

What do you think about the new grading system?

  • @rich-brooks  Gave you a big ‘thumbs up” for starting this post!  I would say I like this feature also.  It gives me a quick way to let people know I appreciate their post even when I do not have time to write a response.  I probably will not be using the “thumbs down” feature as I have always been taught “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all”!

  •  ditto WITH KIM…….i dont like the thumbs down…it  might  bring   lots of  negativity and  hard  feelings….  i  just posted on this on  the other side….

@kimkline but i love thumbs UP

and  cant imagine  a friendly  thumbs down, a good  healthy disagreement/discussion  out in the open  seems  better…. not a  public    thumbs down that you dont have to   explain….

  • BRAVO  BRAVO  BRAVO

  • @annfurnivall   agreed!

  • I like it and I gave it a thumbs up!

  • I’m lovin’ it!!! SME just keeps getting better and better. @rich-brooks

  • @rich-brooks Definitely a thumbs-up, but am on the fence about the thumbs down. while both are subjective, ignoring a post you have no interest in is also a thumbs down, but without the negativity.

I do think thumbs up can be a barometer for the types of posts that are trending.

  • Kudos for the thumbs up idea! But I agree with others about the thumbs down. When commenting on controversial daily news items which often get posted here with a link back to the original story, a thumbs up could signify a thanks for posting but a thumbs down for the same item could signify a dislike for the topic, a dislike for the comment, or just generally grumpiness overall. The thumbs down is simply too ambiguous to do any good on SME, but controversial enough all by itself to promote a negative feeling where none was intended.

So bottom line… yahoozie for the thumbs up… but ditch the downer thumb. Let’s keep SME happy or neutral… or let people use their words to explain otherwise. Isn’t that what we teach our children?

  • @rich-brooks I like it. Wouldn’t use the thumbs down except in fun perhaps. Another update I’d like to see is a favorite / save topic function. The search option is so unwieldy because it’s not just the club topics.
