  • Do you ignore mean and irrelevant Twitter posts directed at you? I am not referring to cheap shots directed at you professionally, but ones that are personal (and possibly could be construed as threatening)?

Do you just block them and move on?

  • this would not only apply to twitter but just about every social media platform.

if its personal threat, you still need to treat it as if it were a business threat (assuming you run your own business) as people digging around could stumble upon it, and your retaliation so it would have to be above board.

having said that, if the comments are truly threatening you could either delete / block them or speak to your lawyer.  i would never recommend deleting a business related comment (even if its critical) but 100% personal ones, sure, seeking advice would also help i imagine.

  • @dextereugenio thanks. I did block–this was threatening in a manner of speaking, but the individual(s) are generally ugly in their posts. It was not a follower, so they must have picked up on a re-tweet.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani Apparently this sort of thing happens to a lot of women online.

I would ignore and block (never respond) and even document it will someone like a lawyer or even the police so they have a record if it continues. Twitter I wouldn’t worry about too much but if it starts happening on you blog etc I would start documenting it.

Hope it was just a one-off!

  • @russellallert so far yes-

For now I will be content with blocking, but appreciate your good advice.

  • @joanmuschampfagnani I think you got some good advice already in this thread but I would add this: report the individual(s) as spammer.

I know I have done it a few times through Hootsuite, which is what I use to manage my social media accounts. It wasn’t related to a personal threat, but to trolls who were invading discussions we were having on a specific hashtag. Or these folks that use hashtags randomly to sell stuff. Either way, reporting as spam is an effective way to flag a user and get the account banned by Twitter.

  • @fredericgonzalo Thanks- will try that, too!
