Need a Friendly Directory on SME or I’m Lost! (6 posts)

  • Helpy!!! I’m trying to wade through my alphabetical friend directory, but having to go page by page to find people. Veeeeeeeerrrry tedious and time consuming! I was looking for a friend named Ann, but had to go through more than 10 pages to find her.

If you’re name starts with C or worse, then I’m sure to NEVER find you. Oh, pooh!

Anyone discovered a neat trick to wading through the directory and finding friends quickly and easily? (And please don’t ask me for last names or correct foreign spellings. I’m much better with photos, lol). Quite honestly, sometimes I’m just trying to find “that nice gentleman who I met in a forum who knows about ABC”… or the whiz-bang computer gal I can’t for the life of me remember how to spell her name or if I even remember it correctly. That king of thing…

    So anyone have shortcuts?

  • Nope, no short cuts here.  If you don’t remember names well, “search” will be of no use to you.

Suggestion – copy and plop those names into a database with a notes section as to the reference you wish to use.  Couldn’t hurt to have that as a back up.

  • Why not use Evernote and have a notebook for contacts only? Go to a person’s profile page, clip it to Evernote, use the person’s name as the name of the page and use keywords like “SME, Wordpress, Female, Oregon, SEO, Specialist, Helpful, Nice, Classmate …. whatsoever” to tag them. With one keyword or combination of more than one you should fine everyone easily

  • Ok, i just realized you have almost 3500 contacts already … tough work to catch up with those, but better start now for the new ones than adding more to the jungle.

If I’m looking for a particular person, I put as much of their name as I can remember in the “Search” field above the “Browse Networking Clubs”.

For example, I put “Ann” and it gave me references to 5 different members.

The other thing I do is to “Follow” any topic that contains a post or person of interest to me.

Other than that, making lists, or using something as Evernote would probably be best.

    Good luck!

  • Yeah, I knew I needed to do this along… but hey… there’s never enough time, right?

I’m a voracious reader and type very fast when writing or responding to forums, because that’s my brain talking through my fingers… but… typing into a database is an eye-memory-hand coordination event that sloooooooooowss me down to a snail’s pace, makes me keep my arthritic neck stiff facing one direction constantly (can’t do it too long or I’ll get a migraine, nerves get pinched, and can’t feel my fingers)… so I try NEVER to do repetitive database typing tasks.

Just dangy… Is there any way to make the directory list 100 on a page instead of 20? Or separate it into A-B-C-D pages instead of consecutive constantly changing pages? I mean it doesn’t help to remember what page someone was on, because more members are added daily, which pushes your friend or contact back to a higher numbered page.

I mean… would that be very difficult to set up… memory intensive… any different than it is now… or even possible?

Fixing that would DEFINITELY encourage more contacts, interaction, and forum discussion than the way it is now. I can’t tell you how many times I read something in the forums and then try to find someone I KNOW would want to be involved in that discussion, but them I’m stopped cold because of the lack of a good finding system.

When I used to hover my mouse over someone’s picture, I seem to remember that it allowed me to somehow send a PM right then and there. It also had there name or there @ name on it. But at some point, I’m thinking around March when my computer crashed and lots of changes happened on SME, my ability to hover, get the name, and send an email ceased to exist. I can still click on someone’s picture and it takes me to their profile page and then I can send an email, but that works ONLY if they are on the LeaderBoard or the active members board below it where I can see their picture, IF I happen to be online when they are.

Long story short, I think we’re all losing out on a lot of interaction and networking opportunities, simply because we don’t have a more accessible name directory. OR the ability to download it… which I don’t think any site really allows.

So, is this something that can be done easily/affordable on SME’s end? Is there some kind of Buddy Press switch that could be flipped that could make our networking attempts a bit easier?

    Watcha think?
