Mobile Payments from Clients? (7 posts)

  • Are any of you accepting mobile payments from your clients using either Square or PayPal card readers?

Do you need a new merchant account? Or adopted by existing merchant accounts (mine is Intuit Quicken).

What is the best platform? I saw the readers available at the local Walgreens recently. Must mean that they are trending up!

  • I haven’t started accepted mobile payments yet, but I found out something important about the processing that you should take into account when deciding which company —

    1) Most such card readers DO NOT scramble the credit card information so if you use the card reader at a public place such as a cafe or trade show, the information can be captured by someone nearby and the money could be taken from you and the credit card numbers could be used again and again by the thief until the credit card company shuts down the account. Yikes!  (I’ve heard that this is true for PayPal or Square and I am not aware if Intuit Quicken works that way … I’d definitely check on that).

    2) Your business insurance will not cover losses incurred by unscrambed card readers so you could be liable for an incredible amount.

Since this is a rather terrifying prospect, I was interested to learn that WorldPay mobile solutions (the world’s third largest credit card processor) DOES scramble mobile credit card processes so that they are totally secure. Their program includes an indemnity waiver up to $30,000 should a breach occur.

For these reasons, if I do add mobile solutions, I will likely use WorldPay. I have a contact there if anybody is interested in learning more/setting up an account.

  • @bob-green I used to work in the payment industry and we sold the service along with the equipment. However, I am a big fan of Square. I used it in a volunteer position and it was super easy. What is also nice is the fee structure. A standard service usually charges a monthly fee, equipment rent, percentage of transaction (which varies upon the type of card, etc.) and a transaction fee. I believe that basic Square charges a percentage per transaction and no monthly fee. They have been adding options lately so their might be more choices.

  • For me, as a Mobil option, Square works perfect, and you have the money on your back account the following day. For my store front, I need a contract with some other brand and I have to pay monthly fees, and to get the money on the bank it takes about a week. I’m really happy with the Square services!!

  • I use PayAnywhere, I researched all the different options and when I got mine they had the cheapest fees. Like the others, the money is in my account the next day with no monthly fee.

Thanks for all the excellent feedback. Good options.

  • I’m another square user. I love it. Not only can I take payments at trade shows, but I can also take payments over the phone.
