Mac & Outlook Compatibility Issues (12 posts)

  • A client of mine uses a Mac with Outlook. Every few weeks, his Outlook calendar crashes and he has to rebuild his history. This leads to missed appointments and calls. Also, sporadic meeting invites he has accepted will go on the incorrect day and/or time.

He asked me if Mac Mail running in the background is causing the problem, or contributing to the issue.

I have never used a Mac nor know anything about them so I am unable to help him. Is anyone an expert with Mac and Outlook that could shed light on this issue?

    Thank you!

  • Karen, No expert but use 4 iMacs. On my personal run Apple Mail and it’s not the comprehensive business program Outlook for Windows is (run in VM Fushion Windows partition) on another Mac. I would not own Outlook for Mac for the same reasons I gave up on Quicken for Mac. The programs are poorly supported by Microsoft, are glitchy and ugly, rarely updated, and when new have fewer features than Microsoft puts in Windows programs. Sorry I can’t help but do feel better having vented a bit.

  • @karenataylor I love my Mac laptop and wouldn’t trade it for anything and yes, I’ve used Windows laptop for years too (and Unix systems). I do use Outlook for Mac and have no experience this problem. But I strongly suggest getting away from Microsoft products and simply switching to Google Gmail/Contacts. Its great and integrates easily with iPhone and always works. No missing appt or events or anything.

I know that doesn’t really answer your question but I hope it helps.

    Thx-Rob

  • Well this is interesting.  I use MS Office Suite.  In the past 2 months my Outlook has missed showing appts I know I entered into Outlook. They are not on my calender later. Then someone show up for an appt and I look stupid for not having them on my c alendar.  So, I am now thinking this is not a problem with my Outlook or me but a problem/glitch in Outlook its self.  Fortunately, so far I have not had Outlook crashes, just the vanishing appts.

  • @karenataylor I am a Mac-only-user concerning my business. However, for one big project I have to work part-time from another location that uses Windows. When it comes to regular syncing mail, calendar and contact details, I go with Apple’s native mail program. With the latest versions (Mail 5.2 on OS10.7.3 for me) you can setup an Exchange account with an external Win-based account. But as stated above from others, I agree to not use Microsoft programs on a Mac environment, especially to not use Microsoft and Mac programs for the same purpose, like Outlook and Mail. Microsoft and Apple are not made for one another…

  • @prsanibel @robmitchell @trudy @ecumenix I appreciate your feedback. I will suggest he move away from Microsoft software and use Google or Apple’s native mail program.

  • One other thing happened and I use a windows setup, no Mac.  Today, in sending out 4 email, I shortly after got a mailer-demon that OutLook/AOL could not send.  Then I changed my Outlook default to gmail.com and guess what. Within 1-20 minutes they were sent out.  I have been having some quirky things so later today I am going to defrag, which has in the past been something I have done regularly. So I think it is a combo of things. @karenataylor @ecumenix @robmitchell @prsanibel

I didn’t realize that they made Outlook for Mac, unless you mean Entourage?

In any case, my guess would be that if Outlook is constantly crashing and needs to be rebuilt that perhaps he’s on an older version of Outlook that needs to be updated or there’s not enough memory on the Mac, which is causing the corruption.

That’s just based on my past history of similar products on my mac.

  • I use, Mac Mail, and haven’t had any problems..this is my 2 cents

  • @trudy @rich-brooks @mari-lynharris Thank you!

@rich-brooks I also let my client know to make sure he is using the latest version of Outlook, to check his memory and defrag once a month. And if it continues to crash, it’s a compatibility issue.

  • @karenataylor Can you defrag a Mac? I know you used to be able to, but Mac’s don’t “need” to be defragged, so that may not be an option.

  • As a Mac user.

They do make outlook for Mac, I do not use it Google Calendar works better across platforms, Outlook 2011 for mac works better then the others did though.

Mac hard drives can be defragged but need it less then Windows, repairing permissions and resting pram will fix a lot of issues http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379.

I have to say though word and excel on a mac are more versatile then on Windows.
