Local SEO or Local Promoter (7 posts)

  • I just wrapped up an event for a client that for the past 5 years used a local promoter. This year he went with just using me for local seo, sem, and smm.

I optimized the event with local seo, sem, and smm. At the end of the event when all things we tallied up we came to the conclusion that we had sold more pre-sale tickets than any other year and had the biggest turn out than any other year. But, when we added up the cost it would have been cheaper to use a local promoter because not as much would have been spent on online marketing.
I am curious as to what people think about this situation.

Would it be better to just a local promoter or a local SEO/SEM specialist?

  • i would  be looking at the outcome….did it have anything to do with money?   was  the  extra  advertizing  worth it?…could  you do some math and  see what  each  ticket  cost in marketing in the   different  years?

.. it w ould have  been  cheaper still to do no   marketing….???? but  that wouldnt make sense ….

What do you mean by “local promoter?”

Also, any SEO work you did has ongoing impact, so that’s going to help next year’s ticket sales as well, so you need to amortize that cost over several years.

(Look at me using big words!)

Also, depending on what type of social media work you did, that could have long term impact, too.

It’s apples and oranges. He’s investing in his future success, not just this year.

  • Thanks Rich!

I live in a town that uses what’s known as “local promoters” they have a following of people and they typically engage in spam on all the social channels to try to get their following to go to an event. The events they promote are smaller, local events at various businesses around town.

I guess I’m poking and prodding to see if there is a business case to instead use a local seo because of the reach and longevity of the work that is done. I’m noticing that a lot of businesses are tired of reaching the same crowd with these promoters so I’d like to prove that there is another way.
Thanks for the insight it’ll help me pitch my case!

  • HI @mikelzaremba

@rich-brooks  Local promoters are everywhere, not just where Mike lives. Event planners work with promoters all the time. It is basically the same thing as social media online but in the real world – they promote events, like concerts, political rallies, fundraising efforts, etc. through newspapers, magazines, flyers, mailings, etc. and now they promote online too (for some real world event vs. virtual events like webinars, etc.)

I’d say if you got a promoter that is also web savvy you’d have the best of both worlds.

Oops! I got caught up in the “promoter” thing and did not answer you question. SEO is more important than ANY OTHER FACTOR for online success, no matter what the biz is or the event may be.

This is my main gig (SEO) so of course, I would recommend that.

But listen up – customers and cell phone users are not savvy web users, they are just customers.  ALL most of them know is “search” and that is where first efforts must be concentrated. SEO is still number one, regardless of anything else you hear otherwise online.

Google does not like and never has liked the idea that some people can help gain an upper hand with SEO – and although that is counter-intuitive, they push other agendas as being as important, and THEY ARE NOT as important.

    It’s just that simple.

    Eileen :D

  • Funny conversation but, are the promoters bringing valuable visitors? Or just bodies? Is “Attendance” the goal? Or is something of value actually for sale?

Which method brings the most valuable “attendee”?
