Linking to other websites? (10 posts)

  • I’ve heard that getting your website link on other websites increases search engine results. Is this true? I’m new to the social media phenomenon and am looking for ways to increase the online presence of my martial arts business. Thanks in advance for your comments!

  • Hey Brian

Having other sites linking to your website is beneficial for SEO provided they are “do follow” links.  It’s also better if Google see’s the site linking in as a “high authority” site.

There is also a benefit of direct traffic from “no follow” links that are placed on higher traffic sites as visitors will click and come to your site and are usually looking for a solution that you have.

I hope this wasn’t too confusing, let me know if there’s anything I can do for you.

Jon is absolutely right. In the short-term, I would also focus on my content that is valuable, relevant, and compelling. Video in your case may be great. You can video a session, provide a tip, or record a testimonial from a client.

Content is the key, and when talking about websites I always say there are two issues:

    1. How will you get them to your website? i.e. search engines like Google, social media, blog, post comments on other blogs, and email.

Put it on YouTube, and in the description field put a link to your website.

There is so much more I can’t cover or I’d be writing a book. Hopefully, some other can chime in.

    2. What do think about you after they find the website?

You have 1/20th of a second to make an initial impression. So, look and feel is extremely important. Then functionality, ie everything works and I’m always two clicks away from where I want to be.

  • @donpurdum Great Post!

I can’t believe I didn’t think of mentioning video (as it’s a key part of what I do for my clients).

  • @dakotalocal

That’s what’s great about SME. Sometimes we are so focused that we miss the obvious. It happens to us all.

Glad I could in small way!

    Some great stuff here already.

    Some basics:

    • Create quality content that helps your ideal customer. No one wants to link to a 5 page brochureware website.
    • Create content that people WANT to link to: exhaustive lists, top 10′s, how-to’s, controversial stuff, etc. I.e., The 10 Best Martial Arts Moves to Defend Yourself in a Bar, The 50 Greatest Martial Arts Movies, How to Stop a Bully Without Raising a Finger, etc.
    • Get the easy links, i.e., from vendors, membership-based orgs, chambers, etc.
    • Find people who link to your competitors and ask them to link to your site as well.
    • Get guest blogging opportunities. Not just at other martial arts blogs, but at yoga blogs, health blogs, meditation blogs, birthday party organizing blogs, etc. These allow you to create links back to your own site.

    Good luck!

  • Yes, this is true. You can add your social media links to your sites, and vice versa. Great info from everyone.  Enjoyed reading the responses.

However, you should really be focusing the keywords and keyword phrases you are using with your linking efforts.  That is what will get your sites up in the search results.  You can have all the links you want and they will not matter if no one can find them or you….

Internet marketing tools make a difference in how we find success in social media.

  • @rich-brooks @randithompson

Wow, great tips! I will look into them and develop a strategy for them!!

    Thanks!

  • @brianjohns You can also create more websites with keyword rich domain names and create simple squeeze pages (landing pages) that have a YouTube video and content that screams calls-to-action. You then link back to your website and SM accounts using keywords and long-tail keyword phrases.

  • @brianjohns  do  exactly  whar  @rich-brooks  said  and  you’ll  be  fine.
things to add on his list:once you have content start blog hopping and comment on other peoples blog.
this way you’ll meet other like minded people and get others to notice you. Comments helps you build links so better add it to your list.
