LinkedIn Endorsements (8 posts)

Topic tags: endorsements, linkedin
  • Greetings all.  I was hoping someone could help me understand linkedin endorsements.  I am not sure exactly what they are and how to apply them.  Do you just endorse someone because of what they write in their profile?  I am not sure how you could check out something before you endorse it.  I have gotten a few endorsements on Linkedin but not sure what the etiquette is?  Do I just endorse back because they endorse me?  Any info would be appreciated.  Thank you.Peace, Robert

This is LI’s equivalent of Klout points. They’ve de-emphasized recommendations and promoted Endorsements.

They come from your bio, so yes: anything you could put in your bio could be something someone endorses you for.

Personally, I don’t believe in tit for tat in endorsements. If you check out their bio and know they are good at social media, or knitting, or baking, then you should consider endorsing those skills.

If you don’t know, or can’t honestly endorse those skills, I wouldn’t lie.

  • @robertbaker @rich-brooks  I agree with Rich.  I receive as all of us do, a periodic reminder from LI to Endorse connections for a specific skill.  Sometimes you can select the people presented and endorse individually.  Sometimes if you click Endorse it endorses all those presented.  I never click that because frequently, even though I do know the individual, the skill presented to be endorsed is not one that I personally am aware that they have.  I think that Recommendations still hold greater value and just Skills alone.  Happy New Year.

  • @robertbaker I only do endorsements for whom I know and have worked with in regards to the skill.  @rich-brooks Interesting perception on recommendations (requiring some thought and writing skills) vs. endorsements (quick click). I would have to agree with you too.

  • @rich-brooks @Trudy Phillips @Kristy C. Cartier  Thank you for your thoughts.  I truly appreciate it.  I was thinking on the same lines at @rich-brooks.  Peace, Robert.

  • HI @robertbaker

It’s all already been said but I will add that if you are honest in your recommendations and endorsements, you should have no problems down the road.

Here is why – what if you endorse someone you hardly know for say ‘Social Media Savvy,’ when you don’t really know them at all? Later, someone could come back to say they took your endorsement to heart and got royally uh, taken.  Who is to blame?  How would you fight against charges that you were dishonest, misleading, or unscrupulous?  At the very least you could be labeled untrustworthy.

It’s not really only a matter of honesty but a matter of protecting yourself, in the long run.

    Eileen

  • @robertbaker I am a believer that Recommendations are far more powerful as they require more thought and action on the part of the person writing. Endorsements are a simple click, and LinkedIn feeds them right to you.  To me, it has greatly devalued them.

I agree with @rich-brooks @trudy @kc_kreative @supereb and only endorse those I know specifically possesst the skills. As the profile owner is the one that creates their list of skills, they have the option to be as “creative” as they choose.

I’ve seen skills come up on some individuals that I know they might need for search purposes, but in a million years I wouldn’t recommend them or endorse that particular one.

And, while I don’t do a tit-for-tat endorsement, if I do know someone well and they endorse me, I might take the time to find a listed skill I can heartily endorse.

  • I agree to all comments above and am very strict with my endorsements. I only endorse people who I really know are good at a specific skill and I really only endorse that specific skill. I also agree that one should not forget about the recommendations because it’s really trustworthy if someone takes the time to write something about you.
