Latest Google update (22nd Jan 2013 (8 posts)

  • Hello fellow members. I am very new to this so not sure if I am doing this right…?
    Anyway, my site has dropped from page 1/2 to page 10 overnight for the main keywords. Not sure what to do – any suggestions?

    There are so many reasons why a site can drop after a Google update. Some main ones:

    • A lot of duplicate content on your site.
    • Not a lot of content on your site.
    • Lots of questionable links to and from your website.
    • Low-quality content (based on Google’s algorithms)
    I would probably work on:
    • creating high quality content that focuses on your targeted keywords, 
    • get some guest blogging opportunities and create keyword-rich links back to your website/blog from within the blog post, 
    • consider creating YouTube videos about your keywords (it’s often easy to leapfrog the competition w/videos), and
    • take a look at your site and see if you feel that you’re doing anything that’s shady, questionable, or not in the best service of your audience.

  • This is where Google Analytics becomes your friend. We also find it valuable to have a second KW tracker http://goo.gl/R9jGB where we track 1000 keywords for $16/mo. That said if you watch the ebb and flow of KW’s you’ll see swings of more than 200 SERPS weekly for lots of KW’s in both directions so next week things may revert. @Rich Brooks is absolutely right but I’d like to expand. to focus on a handful of keywords is not a good practice - Remember BP (Before Panda) ” We’ll get 5 keywords on the first page of Google guaranteed”! I blew a few grand chasing that dream until the light went off – Your top keywords should not drive the majority of your traffic – If you look at your GA you’ll see if you have 10,000 monthly unique visitors they we’re probably driven there by more than 5000 search terms. Longtails have a much higher conversion rate. Look at the overall health of the site To get you some movement look at all today’s position 11 – 20 keywords as it’s easier to push them a few SERPS to page one using @Rich Brooks recommendations than chasing SERP 55.Without getting deep into your site – I would put your “about us” content on your home page get alt tags on your images

    Many thanks for your reply. Yes, I can see what you mean about the about-us page and the home page. I shall have a look at that and perhaps add more contact to the new home page.

    Should image alt be short (2-3words) or should they be fully descriptive and should I try and use keywords?

  • I do them fully descriptive laced with keywords – alt tags enable the vision impaired to “hear” what’s on the screen so you’re literally writing to blind people - http://goo.gl/ppdBc
