Keywords from ”Outsiders” (8 posts)

Topic tags: Google+, keywords
  • I work for a small IT company in Idaho. In the IT industry the language is completely different. I have the challenge of translating it to normal English. I fear I am becoming an IT insider and I’m loosing the context that “outsiders” need in order to make sense of what we do. We are a B2B company and most of our customers are small businesses as well. I’ve been doing some SEO that has proven fruitful on the keyword I have been focusing on but I want to make sure they are the right keywords (my big ones are “managed IT services” and IT infrastructure services”. I need some help from those of you who are part of a small businesses to help me come up with some good keywords you might search for when you are in need of IT help (not just computer repair, but complete infrastructure setup, management, maintenance, and repair – the whole package). Although perhaps someone looking for repair may be a potential customer. We just want to stay away from home users who have something go wrong with their computer ya know. Any suggestions? What would you small business guys search for in google for IT services at your business?

  • @jesse-hyde   welcome to the  forum… i would look at   some of your   big   guys in your field and see what words work for them……

i have a  small  business with  big   internet   presence  and i have no idea what  ……i t  infrastructure services are…. so maybe   it is  too far in the bubble  ,,,like  you  said….lol….what would a small business  need from you  might  be a way to   look at it too,,,

  • HI  @jesse-hyde  —

What you’re looking for is ‘plain spoken’ english.  Try these:

business network setup  -  business network maintenance  -  business server setup  -  business server maintenance  -

There are probably dozens more and we can brainstorm them more as we go along.  Use the word ‘business’ in reference to your services and people will know you are not doing residential repairs.

    Maybe more tomorrow!

OH – Jesse, give us a link to your website so we can see how you are presenting your services – that might help us see what you have already as opposed to what you may need.

  • @jesse-hyde
Do you have a current customer base? Send them a very short survey, asking them what phrases the use around the office to describe what they need, and ask them what their biggest IT challenge is.

I might also run those phrases through Google Adwords Keyword Tool to get more ideas as well.

    Good luck!

  • something  seldom  talked about is  that  the  ones who  really might  buy  the services  , the owners, might  be  even  farther outside the  tekk  talk  bubble  than normal. their  job is  completely different….  ..{thinking of myself}….what we really  care about is time and  strategy and how it will actually help our  business……  and  maybe how  to make all  our  computer   plans   work the  best…..,and have  better  computer  plans…

in other words my  grandkid might understand what you are saying  but  hes not hiring….

@jesse-hyde  and then the owners have to  believe you…which is also a problem… becasue   there are so many  sad  stories out there  where  folks have  paid good money for poor  results….. probably  for  poor  communication at the start…….that  you  really have some  big  hurdles  to cross…

maybe  you  should somehow  find a  friend or  mentor  who is  maybe a::: beautician[salon owners]   OR  boutique  owner  or busy resturant  owner    or  old  business  guy  from  SCORE..and  see if he or she   can hear what you are trying to   communicate to   potential  business customers……….

we all want  easier and more efficient….  !!!!!

  • Those are all great tips. Thanks all! Keep them coming if you have any more suggestions. In the meantime, I’ll try these out. @supereb, Our website is http://www.srv-it.com. Thanks again!

  • HI @jesse-hyde

I see your biggest problem and will post that later today or tomorrow.  This will take a little preparation.
