Judging People on Twitter (3 posts)

Topic tags: following, tweets, Twitter
  • When you see someone’s profile on Twitter, whether because you just got a notice they followed you or you just stumble upon them, how do you decide whether to follow them?
Is it their photo? Their description? Location? How much they @ other people? Whether they tweet out quotes all day long? Their followers to following ratio? Do you follow back everyone who’s not a bot?
I’ve changed tactics over the years, and as I’ve launched my new side project, I’ve been following almost everyone who has been sharing or RT’ing my content.

I also follow everyone from Maine. It’s just my thing.

Curious to know how you judge if someone is “follow worthy?”

  • HI @rich-brooks —

I don’t think this is set in stone for any of us.  Of course, I don’t follow certain types of accounts (the porn, gangsta kids, abusive, drugs, promised followers, etc.) but I do have a set of “nevers” or “sometimes”.

I try NOT to follow anyone who —

    1 – Has not added a picture and/or a bio.

2 – Has not tweeted.  I mean, why not?

And pretty much that’s it.  I use a few tools like “who unfollowed me” on a regular basis.

Like you, I follow as many accounts in my home state of KS as possible and only unfollow those if they are individuals who then unfollow me. I follow a lot of accounts that don’t follow back, like NASA (about 50 NASA accounts) and the biggies, like Brian Solis, Darren Rowse and Guy. I don’t follow celebrities for the most part (altho’ there are a few of those too – Star Trek actors mostly, heh). I follow a ton of writers/authors as I am an avid reader.

This is for my personal account, which btw, is the only account I have on twitter for me and my businesses. I do it all in one place and use hashtags when appropriate.  I have the max lists allowed and use those on a daily basis too.

My criteria is probably not your criteria as individuals will all have their own set of rules to follow.

  • @rich-brooks Like @supereb  It is more of a vibe that I get. I don’t generally follow no photo accounts unless it’s a business (then logos are okay). Anything with a sexy or partially photo is a automatic block (after looking at their stats/tweets). I don’t follow anyone who just tweets quotes as I have enough of those already! (Check out The Pocket Guru though.)

I review the 3 preview tweets and if I cannot make a decision, I will review their full account. The original or curated content has to be interesting.

I find that I as I gain more followers, the pickier I get in following back! And while I don’t follow Maine folks, I’m a sucker for a Virginia Tech Hokie, weather fan or from Aussie/UK origin :)
