Jing Is Dead! Long Live the Jing! (19 posts)

  • After sorting through 3,000+ emails delayed by my continuing computer crash saga, I came upon distressing news!

OMG, my dear sweet Jing is dead! Straight away, I penned a plea to Master TechSmith with my concerns over their unseemly offer to replace my companion. Not wanting to insult, I made them a proposition. I’ll let you know their response.

Meanwhile, I’ve started this forum in memory of my dear Jing. Please leave your thoughts and condolences below. Here is the letter I penned to TechSmith:

RE: OMG, the Jing is Dead! Long Live the Jing!

Solemn greetings, in these times of terrible mourning. Thank you for your kind email informing me that my dear Jing is dead. I am distraught and overcome with grief.

In your email to my (email) address regarding Jing’s death, you offered a stand-in companion to replace my dear Jing. Specifically, an upgrade to SnagIt at 50% off.

Thanks for your generous offer, but quite frankly, in my time of mourning I was a little disturbed you would play matchmaker so soon after Jing’s untimely death. I truly need time to catch my breath and boo-hoo.

Then upon further reflection and acknowledgment that life must go on and the handyman duties Jing did so well for our family must be resumed by some strong shouldered companion, I decided to reconsider your offer.

However, if I am forced to choose under duress, during my dark hours of grief, I would suppose that I’d prefer to choose my own new mate. Wouldn’t anyone in my position?

So, without further fuss, I must confess straight away that I’d much prefer to replace my lean and mean Jing with a strong, full-bodied and fully equipped hunk like Camtasia for Mac at 50% off.

Now don’t misunderstand. I miss my little Jing, but I have a hankering suspicion that my man Mac set afire with all those mystical Camtasia sutra teachings may just be the spark to snap me out of my grief! It’s just a thought, but a sparky one that simply lights my fire!

THAT would surely soothe ALL my Jing companion wounds and mourning,  providing a better snug fit for most of my online and offline snagging needs.

Alas, however, SnagIt, even at 50% off, just doesn’t offer enough for his ransomed price, not compared to my dear little Jing or my man Mac’s robust Camtasia. At 50% off my man Mac’s Camtasia would definitely heal ALL my wounds.

So what say you? Would you allow me the justly, robustly compensating companionship of Camtasia for Mac at 50% off? How unseemly I speak of such things at a time like this, but needs need to be met so I simply must.

I thank you for your kindness, help and understanding in my time of great mourning and deep dispair. I trust you will consider this proposition with all due discretion, caring, and empathy for those of us who have lost our loving and dear companion — our Jing.

And, too, thanks in advance for your thoughtful consideration in this matter. I’m sure yall want our dear Jing to rest in peace, knowing that yall have taken good care of the loved ones he left behind.

Respectfully yours, Jing’s, and hopefully my new man Camtasia Mac’s…

  • Jing is dead? Too bad but I had not used it in awhile. Would like to go Camtasia but it is twice on a pc what it is on a Mac. I am currently using Screencast-O-Matic but another perhaps worth looking at is called Wondershare Creator.

    Good luck!

  • @craigmjamieson I know what you mean about the pricey Camtasia for PCs. And I love Screencast-O-Matic because it extends Jing’s 5 minute limit to 15 minutes, plenty of time to accomplish any screen recording task.

Never heard of the Wondershare Creator, but thanks for the tip and I’ll go check that out now.

Still crossing my fingers and stars, holding out hope TechSmith will pity the girl who wrote such a letter and bestow me my 50% off Camtasia for Mac, lol. Yeah, right.

Thanks for sending luck my way, Craig.

  • Farewell Jing, I never knew you! @atlantarobin

  • Does anybody know why it’s gone?

  • @atlantarobin Boo Hoo I’m with you ….Now, I need a replacement. So, from what I gather there is  Screencast-O-Matic and Screensteps decision making time again :(

  • @atlantarobin

Thanks for the update on Jing. I wasn’t aware that the had shut down, and I’m also now in the hunt for a replacement.

@craigmjamieson -Thanks for tip aout Screencast-O-Matic

  • You are welcome! Go Screencast-O-Matic Pro for a whopping $12/year :) Get’s you 60 minute recordings although you can only store up to 15 minute ones on their website. EZ upload to YouTube and since we are on that topic. The last time I uploaded to YouTube I ran into a 15 minute ceiling yet I see videos on there in excess of that? Video is really something quite new to me. Does YouTube have a paid platform that allows you to upload videos in excess of 15 minutes?

    Thanks!

  • In my state of mourning, I feel it unseemly to squeal with excitment and dance a little jig on my table-top, but dance away I do!

    CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? OMG!

    HAPPY LEAP DAY, FELLOW CAMPERS!

  • Congrats and well deserved @atlantarobin I too was saddened to see the little guy off to the software scrapyard, though not as deeply as you I suspect.

I called immediately when I saw the email and asked if they would extend this offer to Camtasia. They did give me a discount not otherwise advertised for being one of the first to respond, though not as generously as they did for you.
But alas, I am a Michigan guy and with full support embrace and endorse all TechSmith products and would gladly pay full price for all of them.

    Thanks for the great post.

  • @craigmjamieson Short, sweet, one message, one call to action should top your video guidelines, Craig. Even tutorials should be broken down in no longer than 5 minutes sections. It forces you to plan better, edit better, and your audience will appreciate your not wasting their time. Just knowing that you pack a lot into a little space will make them come back to you over all the drawn out uh… uh… uh… unplanned time wasters on YouTube. I try to in-camera edit whenever possible to forgo the need to edit later. That takes planning up front.

Personally, I don’t even bother watching any YouTube video that’s longer than one minute. It’s a dead giveaway they don’t understand or respect the time needs of their audience.

Plus, just think of the additional number of vids you can create and upload and get viewed once you understand this key <1min time factor. More vids on YouTube and elsewhere linking back to your website adds juice and higher rankings for your business in the SERPs. It’s good for you; good for your busines; good for your audience.

    Robin

  • @atlantarobin Thanks , Robin! Sound advice and I will “attempt” to put it into action:)

  • @craigmjamieson I hear you, Craig. LOL, I get “attempted” a lot, but reality is I’m a time waster, too, boo-hoo!

  • @atlantarobin  Well, a “time waster” may be a little too judgemental and severe. I prefer ”manic attention to detail” :)

  • @craigmjamieson Oh, what a positively positive view on my shortcomings. I shall immediately add that to my vocabulary primer.

  • @atlantarobin They keep me alive to serve this ship (Ben Hur) :)

  • Alas, my fellow campers, I mispoke, so I must clarify.

Jing Pro is dead. It will no longer be sold. The Pro buyers will be downgraded to the free version, but apparently it is still available for use. Funny that TechSmith didn’t clarify that for me.So..

    JING FREE still lives FREE!

    @craigmjamieson @juleswebb @jasonwiser @ptwylie @warrenveach @deairby

  • @atlantarobin
Thanks Robin. I hope to maybe be able to put Jing into use but haven’t had time so far.

  • Update: Apparently, TechSmith has released a new souped up version of Camtasia for Mac. They graciously sent me the free update today. So glad I sent that silly email. You just never know what good things can come your way… if you just get the courage to act… to take one step forward… even one silly, reckless step forward.

Forward motion, no matter how silly, begets opportunity!

    Just my thoughts…
