Is This A Good Idea? Let Me Know What You Think. (6 posts)

  • As I’m currently get closer to my social network launch new ideas are starting to pile up. But there is one I want to run by you guys/gals to see what you think.

Upon sign up everyone will automatically be put in a community. The community will be based on city which will be a custom field in the sign up form. (later they can create sub-groups within or out of the city community).

    The reason for this is…

Going forward once a community has been developed to (for argument sake) 100
members, they can then vote on a local establishment they would like to try (list of local establishment will be provided). Any local establishment that has 75% of the vote, we will then approach with a Groupon type deal which will then be offered to our online community.

This helps me in many ways. I don’t have the budget or manpower to be running the streets trying to find businesses to promote so I feel my chances of success are better this way because…

    1. A group of people chose it so sales conversion should be relatively higher.
    2. I can approach a local establishment with more confidence because I have the power of community behind me.

Stay tune for idea number 2

  • @relevant is this a Facebook App or just a general website where people would sign up?  If it’s a general website, I’m going to move this into the Small Business forum.

But just a thought, it sounds very Groupon-like because when you sign up for Groupon you get information about the city you registered with.  But I do like the fact that the people vote on a place.  I would think you may need to narrow the choices.  The other concern is that many establishments haven’t opted in to this and may feel strong-armed by 100 people asking for a discount when that isn’t their personal business model.  So I would think you would need buy in from the establishment as well beforehand.  Just my thoughts.

But I think these large group-discount models have some traction these days so it’s good to think about different ways to approach it!

  • @andrea-vahl. That is only a part of what the website will offer. I like what you are saying but if had a business and you heard 100 new customers would like to try your service..
    A. would that boost your confidence about reputation of your business?
    B. would you not try and put together a deal that is beneficial for all parties involved?

I would think a smart business person would not turn his/her nose up at 100 new people walking through the door but instead try to make it fit in to whatever business model they have.

Maybe this topic does belong in the small business section.

  • Very cool,  @relevant – it definitely sounds interesting and I’m going to move this to the small business section to get some more feedback from those folks!

  • I like it, Rudy. Keep us posted.

  • This sounds good Rudy.
