Is there an open source web technology programmer in the club? (8 posts)

  • I would like to determine if WordPress would be a good fit as a CMS for an open source groupware program that I had built some time ago.  My intention is to install a CMS, and be able to offer the program as a software-as-a-service product.

This software has been built upon Sun Microsystem’s J2EE framework. The application is comprised of several HTTP servers which access a shared MySQL database. Source code from the Jetty and Apache Projects have been used to create this software.  It is coded using Java, PHP, Python, and Ajax.

If there are no programmers here that I can exchange ideas with, any help in referring me to a freelancer or company who could help would be appreciated.

  • WordPress is a template, it’s not too intelligent as far as apps go. Having said that, maybe you just need some forms to  be filled in.

Have you considered blogging your question and asking the social world for a solution?

  • @richardmclaughlin Thanks, for checking in Mac.

I’ve read that WordPress is actually a web framework that programmers actually build web applications on.  It seems there are as many people for as against using WordPress as a platform.

I was hoping to find a programmer here in the club who has some real-world experience with using WordPress as a CMS for a multi-site web-based application with a front-end and a fairly complicated back-end.

I thought I would start here, rather than risk being sold something by companies who may over-promise.

Do you know of any forums where independent programmers hang out?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

  • @mgoes

I run a web development shop that has customized in PHP development and CMS work for 14+ years. Wordpress for 4 years and it has become my companys goto platform.

    How can I help?

    Mike

  • @mikelinville Thanks for offering to help, Mike.  I will message you the link to the whitepaper.  Please read through it and let me know if you feel WordPress would be an option as a CMS.

  • @mgoes Oh, Michael! I’m having a senior moment… and can’t remember her name… searched but cannot find it… I’m thinking her name is something like Julia Webb? She’s my go-to techy gal here and I’m embarrassed I’m having this senior moment and can’t remember for sure! Eeeeeeeck!

But I KNOW Dea Irby or Alexandra or Rich or Amy would remember. PM them and ask. She usually jumps right in to any techy question, so am shocked she didn’t see this one.

Robin Carlisle (going back to my senior stupor to rest my brain now…)…

  • P.S. I’d look her up myself but the membership directory is NOT user friendly. Another eeeeeeeeeeeckkkk!!!!

    Robin

  • @atlantarobin  Thanks Robin.  I’ll PM the members you suggested.
