Is there an end to a product (4 posts)

  • I was having a discussion with some people the other day and I wanted to see what the consensus here was.

    We were talking about how companie/products started and finished. Mainly about the product and if a product has a time limit before it is no longer profitable for a distributor. Personally, I said that if you can find a company/product that everyone can benefit from, no matter what generation/age group, that the profitability would be endless. Some other thoughts were that no matter what product and how popular, it eventually would fade.

    Example: Mary Kay- made a lot of millionaires but now you do not hear of all they hype that you use to hear about.

  • @tschiltz I do believe there is a product life cycle, and that if left unattended, a product will ultimately fade. The internet has changed things so radically that more people can enter the competitive fray–it’s not a bad thing, it just makes keeping up more difficult.

    The product/company need to stay relevant and meet the needs of the audience. At some point, being a mature product with a particular level of sales might suit the needs of the company, but it has to be looked at from an overall strategic perspective. Even then, it’s a lot more difficult to remain complacent in this age than it was 50 or 60 years ago.

  • yes, there is an end to a product….when the market   dismisses it..when the  buyers quit  buying….altho it might  try and hang on way past its~ market says youre OVER date.

    ..but  there are some long , strong    survivors…coke….kleenex…standard oil..our local paper,100 yrs old…

    ..our store.,30 yrs…..we have changed  a lot  but   some main  core  things are  still there….and long  term is  great  your   customer  base  can   grow and  grow…. BUT if i have a product  within the store that  doesnt earn its keep….it  gets  kicked to the  kurb…

    @joanmuschampfagnani good points  joan…

  • great question and answers, thanks @tschiltz @joanmuschampfagnani @annfurnivall
