@deairby go to the USPTO website for information. I have never applied for one, but actually sold services into the agency several years ago. You can get the basics here, but will have to make your own decision whether to engage an attorney.

I do know that the process is not quick, but the application date should ultimately serve as “first come” in the event of another similar application.
