Instagram…do you care? (12 posts)

  • Lots of chatter on the Twitter and Facebook yesterday about Instagram’s “clarification” of their terms of service.

The most surprising thing I saw was National Geographic putting their Instagram account on hold, threatening to delete it if Instagram went forward with the new TOS.

I use Instagram all the time…mostly for personal reasons, but also to create more interesting images for blog posts and Facebook posts.

How about you…will this change anything?

  • @rich-brooks I’m considering deleting my account to be honest. I use it solely to take, store and share pictures of my toddler with my family.

What’s even more alarming is that after January 16th, you can’t opt out.

And while my account is private, and they say that private accounts will remain private, I’m having a hard time trusting them.

  • I have an account and never use it.  I guess I’m in the “I don’t care” category…

  • Morn’n’ Folks.

I don’t use my phone for photos much as I work from home and if I am meeting with a client I always have my camera with me.  I use a small digital camera and plug that into my laptop. It may not be as fast as a phone photo for immediate uploading but since ‘business’ takes more than that as a real effort, I’m fine not needing Instagram, ever.

As far as personal – don’t use it for that either.  SO, I am an “I don’t care.”

  • Hi @rich-brooks

Since I am a non-user I don’t know what the new TOS is about – can you clarify that for me?  I care up to the point that I do know lots of folks who use Instagram. Certainly family and some biz folks.

  • I’m also a non user, but if I was I’d probably pull my account.  I can understand why National Geographic has, I don’t think the way the TOS read that they’d be giving up rights to their photos used on Instagram, but they’d definitely be sharing them. I hope with that kind of backlash Instagram reconsiders it’s position and re-re-writes their TOS.

The big brouhaha was about Instagram selling ads next to your photos (which sounds bad, but is exactly what FB, their new owner, does w/all your posts, and what Google does w/your gmail).

The other issue was that they basically wanted to license your name, likeness and photos to other companies. That sounded a little over the top, but maybe it’s similar to when you see sponsored ads on FB that say “Rich Brooks likes Hair Club for Men.”

    (Um, that’s just an example.)

  • Hiya @rich-brooks

I really like gmail and their ads don’t bother me (much).  But FB ads have always bugged the crapola out of me. Along with the games that people keep sending and suggesting. I turned that off but still get some. Sigh.

That licensing your name, likeness and photos to other companies is a deal breaker though.  I’m certainly glad I did not jump on that bandwagon just to see how it worked.

Thanks for the info!  I’m sure there are articles out there that address this issue and I’ll look for some of those too.  IF people take a photo of ME and use Instagram, I assume my face/name could be sold as a commodity along with any users and that stinks even worse.

  • Hiya Folks -

Here is one I found really interesting -

No, Instagram can’t sell your photos: what the new terms of service really mean.Turns out no one really trusts Facebook after all.

It is long but worth the read.

  • Thanks for the share @supereb

  • @rich-brooks So so so glad that I don’t have an account (work doesn’t either, they have a Flickr account). However, they did listen and reverted back to the original policy. Wonder if Nat Geo’s account cancellation made an impact as well?

  • Imho, at the end of the day, is Instagram bringing you new leads into your site, helping you achieve a new subscriber, fan, follower or even a potential buyer?

If it does, well…you might forget for a while about their TOS, which it will end as something like Facebook, since they own it. Right?

Look at how Instagram can contribute to your overall marketing strategy. There are tons of companies creating a great impact there, “entertaining” their audience, building brand awareness and creating momentum around their brands.

    Thank you!
    Max.
