Infographics, how can we use/create them? (17 posts)

  • Hey all!

I was browsing through the forum list and didn’t find any topics that address my question. If I missed one, please redirect me!

I’ve been exploring Infographics lately and I’m fascinated by how well most designers manage to organize data & still capture the viewers attention. I know hiring out Infographic design can be a little pricey (correct me if I’m wrong, please). I’ve looked for various quotes from different graphic artists, as well as a couple sites including visual.ly.com , and they are out of our budget.
So… I’ve decided to explore the idea of creating them myself. Has anyone tried this before? If so, I’d love for you to point me in the right direction!
It would be awesome if any of you have had any success/failure with Infographics & would be wiling to share your experience.
    Your thoughts are deeply appreciated!
    Thanks so much!
    Kim

  • I have seen some simple ones, that are just a few images with corresponding text. Like one powerpoint slide. If you are happy with that size, you can work in powerpoint to make one slide look as you wish and then select all and group the text and images, then right click the grouped stuff and save as an image.

Option 2 is to get and graphic editing software and learn to use it. Time and money.

    Hi Kimberly.

Here is a link to some online FREE places to make an infographic:

    http://www.infographicsarchive.com/create-infographics-and-data-visualization/

Try out one or two and see how easy and/or intuitive they are for your skill level. Sometimes the choices out there can be mind-boggling. If you find you need a web graphic designer after all give me a holler.

  • Great topic! I love them and would like to use them as well and have also found that some of the programs are out of my budget as well. and I am so glad I found this post thanks so much.

  • Are there any open source place to go to find some made and I can use.

  • @supereb

    Thanks so much Eileen!

This is soooo amazing! I really appreciate the help :) I’ll definitely keep your services in mind if I bump into any trouble along the way.

    @susan-townsend

Susan, I appreciate the encouragement! Glad someone else shares my most recent obsession :) I’m not sure if there are any open source options available for personal or commercial use but I’ll be on the lookout & I’ll be sure to let you know!

  • @kimberlyjimenez …    Elieen’s @supereb  resource is a great one. I would like to add just one other from Hub-spot:

Free Template: How to Easily Create Infographics in PowerPoint

  • @kimberlyjimenez Infographics can be an amazing tool and are great when shared across Slideshare and others using Pinterest.

Maria Pergolino from Marketo held a session at Content Marketing World 2012 about using Infographics/Visual Storytelling to drive demand generation. I found her talk very helpful in outlining the multiple types of graphic types you could use and apply. Infographics was just one of the six she mentioned:1. Comics2. Memes3. Infographics4. Photos5. Video6. Visual Notetaking

Maria repeatedly said that you must think about HOW the customer wants to see the information. I haven’t created any infographics yet, but the visual notetaking is something I look forward to using soon.
If you do use a developer and start using graphics make sure everything is BRANDED so others don’t steal your material and claim it as their own!

  • Thanks for the info @geoffrey-gordon I am looking at becoming a Hubspot partner….their resources are amazing. So your link was nice to see. :) @kimberlyjimenez

  • I’ve gone back and forth to http://Visual.ly a couple times. I’m on it right now checking because I saw this post.

There’s an option of “life of a hashtag” and you just enter a twitter hashtag and it puts in the information. There’s only a few options but it could give you some extra content for a blog post.

  • Hi Geoffrey @geoffrey-gordon

Nice addition on the Power Point info – Something I’ll try out!  :D

  • Hey guys, I was doing some research and I heard http://infogr.am/beta/ is actually planning on launching a In-Design like app on an icloud pretty soon. I’m not sure if its just rumors or if it’s the real deal, but I’ll be sure to let you all know if it’s indeed true :)

    Have a grrrreat week!

  • Visual.ly and infogr.am these 2 free sources where you can create infographic online

  • Hi everyone! I’m also looking at infographics as another element to incorporate into our marketing strategy at the company I work for.

The resources in this thread are great! I also stumbled across 2 other free infographic websites that might be of use to someone here: Picktochart and Easel.Ly
