  • I have a collection of stock imagery both photo and vector art.

Im looking for the best way to drive traffic back to these images using social media

I have been playing around with:

Facebook ( still looking for the best apps to use here)
    Twitter
Just getting into Youtube  with this product  using  slideshows

If you want to know the BEST way to drive traffic, give something valuable away for FREE.

For example, you could give people XX free stock images.  And they could unlock more stock images by simply retweeting or sharing something on Facebook.

This is a cost of advertising you could say, but it could go rapidly viral…

    My 2 cents :)

  • I have thought about unlocking a free first months membership for a facebook like!  Its  good for about 75 image of any size all the way up to the full size 5000px images

  • @jamesjestes

Not that I’m any kind of Pinterest expert, but I would definitely look at that as one potential tool.

Free pic of the day is also a good, proven method.

You might also create a free resource for bloggers; they can use your images as long as they create keyword rich links back to the site.

Affiliate sales: get people selling your photos for you!

Hope this points you in the right direction.

  • If you have photos of unusual places, you could hold a contest on one or more of the social media sites. Post a daily or weekly pic and you’ll award rights to use it to those who contact you naming the correct location.

  • Not sure what you’re doing exactly but would good tagging help?

  • @jamesjestes I use Flickr for image distribution. They have one of the most robust API´s to really get traffic to your site. I recommend the paid subscription as it is cheap and you can have added functionality that you can´t get with the free account.

  • Thanks for all the great info   Im digesting it now!  I just got accepted into Pinterest  so that is my  next move for sure.

  • is your stock in a niche? I am setting up a niche stock site soon.My plan is to advertize and  contact the niche target market -  online and offline.
@ptwyliewould you be willing to share your site and your Flickr id? Thanks!

  • you can take a look at it if you like! http://www.kozzi.com we are now working on pinterest I think its a great Social site for image sites.

thanks for all the advice any more ideas would greatly be appreciated

  • Can you create a group on Linkedin? I”m guessing that you want to sell these images. Who is your target market? Create a group for them. Just by being the leader and including your website in your profile, people are likely to check out your profile and go to your site. You can also share your knowledge there to show what you have to offer. Look into answering questions in the answer section too.

Also, join as many groups as you can, 50 max. Network with others on there and participate in group discussions to generate more traffic to your site.

  • One good result has been knowing about kozzi.com and being registered with it.

  • @ptwylie  I tried to ask you earlier but it did not flag your name fully… would you mind telling us more and/or sharing the flickr account and the site you are driving to? I would be interested in seeing what you are saying in action – this is a new area for me. Thanks!

  • @abigailgorton Hi Abigail,

I use the the flickrRSS  widget for my blog. If you go to my site I have the widget setup in the sidebar  (you’ll need to scroll down). You can set any size, any amount of images. The script grabs what ever you need from groups, user, set, favorite, community so you could make a portfolio of updated images.
Here is a great tutorial on how to use the WP API and the Flickr API if you want to get into the nuts and bolts or build this yourself.http://wp.tutsplus.com/tutorials/create-a-basic-flickr-widget-using-the-widget-api/

  • @ptwylie Thanks Paul, hmm… wondering if I need to be signed in or something… I checked your site in IE ansd Firefox and for each of them, the last entry I see in your sidebar is an inactive-to-me box that says ‘ptwylie personal photos’. But I clicked through to the tutorial, so I think I get the concept. Thanks!

  • @abigailgorton Flickr site has gone down does anyone know if this is due to their recent makeover?

  • @ptwylie Phew! I felt pretty awkward mentioning a problem. I’m sure they’ll be back in no time – the pressure on them must be huge.

  • Im really taking a liking to Pinterest!     I have not messed with Flickr yet!

We are doing a lot of stock vector now too!   Recently we started creating characters that can be used as avatars and such

there are some fun ones in this lightbox  http://www.kozzi.com/lightbox/show/l/714747/page/2/?tag=1060

I think these kind of characters will be awesome for blog sites and forums that need character

    hope you like them!

  • I am dealing with stock photography since 1993 and I can only tell you that you have a hell of a competition. My main question is what is your business model?

  •  @mike-stelzner @jamesjestes Mike’s idea really works. I’m on someone’s stock photo list and about every other week they have a new promo giving away a new “collection” for free. That’s why I’ve stayed on their list for 5+ years.

You’ll build your list fast with free giveaways. You don’t have to giveaway anything in your main collection. Just go to the Gutenberg Library and download pix from there for free. It’s easy for those who know how and people love it that you’ve gone to the trouble of doing it for them, even though they know you got them for free. People love time-savers, so it’s a win-win for all.
