How to Educate an Old School Client on Facebook Marketing (5 posts)

  • A few of my clients are pretty old school and have a really hard time understanding Facebook and social media marketing in general.
What’s the best way to help them understand that it’s about building a relationship and creating conversation. Most of them are just concerned with the number of Likes. Any good articles? Advice?
    Thanks!

  • Hey, Taylor:

I feel your pain!  Here’s an article on my site that I send clients to. Even though I posted this in 2008 it is still relevant today:

    HTH! ;-)

  • it  seems  pretty normal to judge a page  by  likes….  how   else  can  he  see his  word is  getting out?  and  that his advertizing  money is  being  well spent….?   most would  rather  advertize/be a  good  social  place    in a  big  circulation….thats  just  a normal way  of  looking  at ad money….

hopefully  you  can get  some more     people  interested in  his page….  then it will  make  more sense….and  thats probably what he  thought  you  were hired  to do…. a  great page  with  few  viewers  isnt   very   good   from a  business point of  view….

or maybe its a  business that  facebook  just  wont work  very well for….. if its a resturant or a  retail store  you  should  be able to get lots of likes and  good engagement…ifits a mortician,or  divorce lawyer well lots of luck….

Not knowing what type of business they’re in, it’s hard to give specific advice.

I’d probably say, “if Likes are all that are important to you, I’ll get you 1,000 likes by tomorrow and I’ll charge you $50. It won’t do a bit of good for your business, but you can tell your friends you have thousands of people who like you.”

Of course, I’m a smart ass like that. ;)

I’d explain that Facebook is like a networking event: it’s a place to engage, but rarely does money change hands there.

That being said, depending on the business, they maybe be able to do e-commerce through FB…many companies do that successfully.

  • @taylor-smith Their target market may not even be on Facebook. Go where the target market is.
