How to Drive Traffic to a New Site (14 posts)

  • Okay you have a new site launching with 50 quality posts, went through your website launch checklist. Now your live but where is the traffic. How do you drive traffic to a new web site?

  • Where is your audience?

    What do they need?

Answer those two questions first and then you can think of the best way to drive traffic to your site.

SME has a post today about LinkedIn {http://www.socialmediaexaminer.com/linkedin-case-study/} that might help if your audience is on linked in.

    What @richardmclaughlin said.

Plus, years ago we did a new site for an Alaskan Fly Fishing site. I was using StumbleUpon a lot then, so I submitted them there.

The site was good looking (I’m not a designer, but our co. did design it) and it was also amazing in terms of content. The guide really create some robust content for people looking to fish in Alaska.

After two weeks I looked at Google Analytics. Search sent about 60 people, but SU sent over 2K, including a lot of passionate fly fishermen (and women!)

Without knowing what the site’s about, not sure if this particular story would help, but certainly there are communities out there you can tap into to get the word out and drive traffic.

    Good luck!

  • @rich-brooks that is why I try to submit a lot of the SME posts to SU. Sometimes you get generic traffic – but sometimes it’s great.

  • @richardmclaughlin Thanks for the input Mac :) Knowing where your target market is and learning what their needs are then creating the content necessary to address those needs is the first step in traffic generation.

@rich-brooks  Great tip!! I have used StumbleUpon some time ago for it’s entertainment value I had never thought of using the platform for any kind of marketing potential .

  • @richardmclaughlin @rich-brooks

can you recommend any articles or resources on promoting your website on StumbleUpon?

Heard quite a bit about StumbleUpon.. !!

  • Thank you..great info…will connect to SU..

  • @ptwylie

I’m in the same boat as Paul. I’ve used StumbleUpon in my personal life but hasn’t tried it for our business. We’ll give it a try.

    Thanks

  • How important are local people verus national coming to a site in order to build a following?

  • agree with Mac @richardmclaughlin thanks for the SU recommendation, Rich @rich-brooks I would think it depends on the business, Denise @deniseantoon

  • @deniseantoon I would say that depends on where you want your clients to be from.  If you are a local-based business and need your business to come from local clientele, you would want lots of local followers.  It wouldn’t hurt to have nation-side followers for the fact of showing that your business is well-liked and thought of, but to get the business you want, you would want a large local following.  That’s my 2 cents! :)

  • Create a Twitter list of people who fit your target audience. Make the list public, and many of them will follow you back. Then start tweeting with links to your great content. That’s another way to start building traffic.

This is especially a great strategy if you do need local people. You can easily find local people on Twitter.

  • This discussion has been really helpful and timely for me, as we just updated our website recently.  My plan is to build up my Twitter following to 1,000 followers, then do some major topical Tweetcasting.

I’ve never even been on the SU site, so I’ll check that out now, as well.

    Thanks everyone!
