How to Change your Online Persona (7 posts)

  • Entrepreneurs might know the answer to this one… next year I want to transform from a copywriter and marketing book author, to a financial coach and offer virtual coaching and financial education online.

Since I have a number of social profiles and two websites with marketing and copywriting stuff on them, how will I re-build my presence after completing my Financial Counselling diploma and creating a course? While I have written a small book about financial planning and an ebook ‘How to Kick Bad Spending Habits’, how do I change all those profiles without seeming a bit flip-flopper.

  • I’m not really sure that it is a big enough stretch between the two. Although, knowing what your main topic was and if it is really different from Finance (like cooking) would be helpful.

As a copywriter, did you contribute to financial blogs? I know you wrote a finance book and a marketing book…Coaching and Education is what authors do. Would it not just build on your existing authority?

  • Hello @jenlancaster

I think @bob-green has a pretty good handle on the fact that the one will feed the other.  The trick here is to build on what you have and at the same time build a new house along side the existing (successful?) house.
This may not be a lot of help but Seth Godin said this:   Changing personas

Now this link may seem odd to you as it pertains to web design (etc.) however, all the points made are very clearly what you may be looking for to begin your journey to a new brain-storming session as to how to accomplish exactly what you need to do:

Personas: Setting the Stage for Building Usable Information Sites

Some very good information there, be sure to read the blue boxes – that will be your key to re-inventing yourself online.  However, you do have to read the entire article to get all the juice you’ll need to figure out what your next steps need to be.  I could have stated a lot of the same, but knowing what to look for in search, I found it right away and the subject of your question is more complex than I could manage to fit in here.

  • Hi again @jenlancaster

The short and sweet of it — You don’t have to change what you have already. Make a “time line” out of your past accomplishments and ADD your new endeavor as a part of that timeline at the end.

  • Good thoughts, Bob and Eileen. I’ve also found that participating in relevant LinkedIn groups (where the members are interested in financial topics or whatever), can quickly make you an authority in your field even if you are just starting out.

My background is in corporate communications, but as soon as I started joining LinkedIn groups focused on careers/job seeking and participating in the discussions, teasing my career-related blog posts to drive traffic to my site, etc., I quickly became a “career authority” even though I had never been in that area before. Interestingly, many of the people who previously thought of me as a corporate communicator now call me to be their career coach because they have read my LinkedIn discussions.

I was truly amazed at how quickly people changed their perceptions of me because of my presence on LinkedIn groups.

  • @jenlancaster

You might want to pick up a copy of @mike-stelzner‘s Launch. Within the book he talks about how he rebranded himself from The WhitePaper Guy to one of the leading voices in social media.

    It appears to have worked!

  • Thank you Bob, Eileen and Kathy. I never expected such a great amount of helpful advice in this transition.

Yes I have written some about investing articles and have done a lot of background research, so I guess it’s the confidence I need to change profiles. I will still sell my marketing book/manual as there is countless hours and a ton of good ideas in there.
I might check out the book Launch as well, since Ive heard of Mike from the copywriting world.
