How often do you mail your list? (6 posts)

  • I’m wondering how often you mail someone who signs up for your newsletter or updates.

    Obviously, they will receive an acknowledgement, or confirmation (or both) after they sign up.

    But after that, do you mail daily, every few days, weekly or just when you feel like updating?

  • I encourage my clients to create an autoresponder series of 4-5 posts to go out every couple of days after the acknowledgement/confirmation of a newsletter subscription. This could be a series of tips, a tutorial or how-to guide, a special offer along with testimonials to build trust, and encouragement to submit comments or questions they would like to see addressed in future newsletters.

    I believe consistency is important in building relationships and in staying in the forefront of your readers’ minds so ”when you feel like it” probably isn’t the best option. Likewise, do the people who sign up for your newsletter really want to hear from you daily or will it cause them to unsubscribe? Know your audience and write/distribute your newsletter accordingly.

  • Warren – Great question!  And I agree with Debbie’s answer – when someone first opts in to your list they have a high level of interest.  Your mission, then, is to nurture that interest to they point where they take an action, usually a personal contact.  So it’s not just how often you mail to them, it’s why you mail to them.  If you’re delivering good, interesting, relevant information, then 8-10 times over the first two weeks isn’t too much.  However, if your emails are simply sales pitches, then they’ll opt out on the first.

    Another tactic you might try is to tell them how often they’ll hear from you when they opt in – is it to your daily eblast, weekly updates, monthly newsletter, etc.  If they know what to expect and you keep to that schedule, no problem.

    Hope this helps,

    Scott

    Great answers by @debbielynnava and @scottstroud!

    I have an email newsletter which goes out monthly, but I also have a RSS > email feed for my blog which goes out whenever I blog…that’s often 3 times a week, but it could be more or less.

    I have started playing around with a new approach for my RSS > email, however. I’m only going to blast my list with the best stuff, maybe once a week. I’ll still blog about new website launches, but won’t push that out to my list.

    Instead, I’m going to try conversational emails that tease the topic, and ask people to check out the post and leave a comment or share it with their friends.

    I’ll let you know if I get better response that way!

    I agree that they can hear from you too often and start ignoring your emails. So a balance has to be maintained between too much and out of sight, out of mind.

    @scottstroud

    I’ll stay connected to someone’s feed much longer if they are providing value. Sometimes longer than I should. I’ve noticed a few that provide really useful info at first, but then slowly but surely, their messages all turn into sales pitches.

    I really like the idea of letting them know up front how often they will hear from you. Maybe not a bad idea to remind them of that every now and then…

    @rich-brooks

    I have to admit, when I get 2-3 emails from someone every week, I find myself opening fewer of them as time goes by.

    Then I notice I have 50-60 or so un-opened emails from them and delete them all.

    Once that happens a time or two, I unsubscribe.

    If someone does post that often, I’d much rather get a “weekly update” so I can pick and choose which articles I look at.

    Thanks to all of you for your comments and thoughts…have a Happy New year!

  • As long as having great content to share with our customers, we like to send mails once or twice a week depending on our marketing strategy.

    I like to think of the mail as a channel to send very specific personalized messages with premium content. To keep in constant contact where we communicate all kinds of information (always valuable) we prefer using other social media like facebook or twitter.

    this is just a personal opinion based from our experience with our customers.

    Happy holidays!
