The economic downturn also played a big part in this trend. People are much more concerned about personal wealth, and many might be trying to maintain a lifestyle on less (speaking about affluents, not the working poor).
So as a small business, you have to set yourself apart and gain loyalty. I think this includes offering good, quality information and superior customer service. But is that enough?
