How much does an Editor cost? (8 posts)

  • Man I have been getting more and more people wanting help with self publishing, but I need to get a good editor. One I can trust, and who is reliable. I don’t want to go to Odesk or Elance. How much is an average rate for an editor? How do they charge? Any suggestions?

  • I do editing for many business publications. I started this as a side thing due to my own grantwriting and reviewing grants for others that were poorly written. Here in Birmingham AL,  the mistakeshave jumped out at me almost daily while reading the daily newspaper. Yes, I do still read the newspaper. Daily routine, 2 cups coffee, newspaper. I was shocked as to the continued poor sentence construction, missing words, misspelling I was seeing and began recently to offer review/editing to writers. Very reasonable pricing.

  • @jasonwiser

I think it’s all over the place as far as pricing goes.

I used my mom for a while. She was free, but she’d always ask me when I was coming to visit. ;)

I’ve recently used a woman out of CA who’s charging us $35/hr. But I’ve seen prices as high as $100. For the work this woman does, I feel $35 is a steal.

  • @jasonwiser  Editing is an art and you have to trust your editor. I have a wonderful person that edits and does content writing. Jessica Bennett at http://www.endeavorwriting.com/  She is awesome!

  • I know a great editor. She used to be my assistant editor when I was editor of a magazine and she edited my book. Her rates are good.

  • Hi @jasonwise, I am a writer, editor and proofreader at Conquer Publishing. I’m trying to get our Writing Services off the ground (this includes editing and proofreading). Depending on what you’ve written and how long it is our prices start at $25 per hour. And since you would be our first Writing Services client your project would have my personal undivided attention. Please let my know if you’re interested.

  • Thank you all for these suggestions. I appreciate it. Now, what I would like to try to find is the average rates. I see 25$ often, but how many pages can be completed in an hour. Hourly seems a bit uncertain when bidding editors. Am I off on this? I dont want my editor to milk the clock, and I dont want them to rush through. Isn’t per page a better way to price this? If so does anyone pat oer page rates and if so how much?

  • Here are the quotes that I got for our books.  $15-35/hr (depends on the qualifications) and we agreed on how long it takes to do the document.  $.01-.02/word is another metrics that was quoted to me.  By the way, these are from professional firms – not Elance, oDesk or independent freelancers.

The quotes above are for the grammatical editors.  Some actually included editing for content in there.

Keep in mind, this is different from an editing doctor.

I use three types of editors.

    1. Taste editor – They critique me harshly and cross out things all over the place.  Tell me I talk too much.  They make me cry often but it only makes my content better.
    2. Grammatical editor – they check my grammar.  I do have problems with English as it’s my third language.  The mistakes are very consistent.
    3. Compliance editor – Cut out any materials that shows on my checklist of things not to talk about.  Keeps me from getting into hot water with the regulators.
