How Many is Too Many Social Networks (7 posts)

  • Okay, we know that Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn are the biggest 3 Social Media Networks. However there are other smaller networks out there too. But how many are too many to join in the early stages of business. I feel like there are only so many hours in a day for networking, especially if you’re a one person operation. The more networks you join the more thin your available time becomes. The 3 Social Media sights I mentioned above has the ability to tap you into millions of potential customers if you utilize them to the max. I was chatting with a friend and she mentioned that she was going to join every social media site she could. My question to her was between making the products you actually sell, plus working full-time when will you have the time to devote to actually promoting on the sites.  What do you all think how many is too many social medial networks?

  • Very good question… There are as you say only a limited number of hours in the day until you start to outsource repetitive jobs. Until then focus on what makes you money and build a real presence on one or two social media properties – and this is key – WHERE YOUR TARGET MARKET HANGS OUT… that does not automatically mean one of the big 3.

People who love scrap booking probably have their own special place… Go there if that’s what you’re into…

    Stay focused :)

  • @shantelturner-collins I would say the big 3 are Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Although YouTube is not ideal for a lot of individuals it still is one of the biggest I would say probably bigger than Twitter. If your business is not one of the ones that can really utilize YouTube then LinkedIn is definitely your next bet. As for how many is too much? Well, the unspoken rule is 3 is good but you have to know which 3. It may not necessarily be the usual ones. Although Facebook is always and has been proven to be a must have! For example for my business of mobile game and comic book I can utilize YouTube much more effectively than a LinkedIn page. The trick is don’t overload yourself or the quality of your posts will decline. If two is what you can handle then do two. I would say first figure out how many you can handle. Then research 5 and pick the top of how ever many you can handle that your business can best utilize.I hope this helps! Take Care and Happy New Year!

  • You are participating in too many Social Networks when your customers tell you they are tired of seeing you every time they turn around.

Twitter and LinkedIn are very different networking with different uses. If you are just re-posting the same content on each network then you are doing it wrong.

In the end though, you should be tracking your effectiveness for each network you participate in and stop participating in the ones that don’t drive traffic/sales for you. IMHO, participating in a network is not producing fruit for you means you are participating in too many. :)

  • This is a great question. You’re participating in “too many” networks when you find that you’re not able to keep up with them adequately and when you start to feel stretched thin. My thinking is to adopt 2-3 networks that you will use comfortably and regularly and then extend this out if you feel you need more reach.

The key, I think, is to have clear objectives and goals for your social media use- so you can measure your investment and return on investment appropriately.

I don’t think it makes sense to sign up for every social media network you can only to eventually abandon your profiles there.

  • @shantelturner-collins i think it depends on the amount of time you can invest.. i would suggest go for 3 social media platforms but if you’re a start up focus on one..

I think instead of thinkin how many.. ask yourself first whether your audience are on those sites or not.. there”s no reason for you to use twitter or LinkedIn if your audience are not even there.. :)

don’t focus on the tools instead focus on the people who are using those tools.

  • I think it depends on the needs of each company and what is your target audience. A good social media campaign can be more successful if you use the right tools, and usually the more media used to advertise your product or service is likely to reach more people. Of course nothing is achieved by having many channels, if there is no time to handle them.

Rather than thinking of a number of channels to use, I would say that it is appropriate to cover the areas that make a successful campaign.

Use tools that help you network, promote and share. Pick as many tools you can handle that are appropriate to reach your target and is likely to get what you are looking for.
