How do you use Twitter? (7 posts)

  • Twitter’s in the news this morning with their new redesign. They’re rolling out new headers for brands and some other design changes: http://www.businessinsider.com/twitter-2011-12

I was wondering, how do you use Twitter today?

Have you changed the way you use Twitter since first joining?

Do you think you’ll change your Twitter strategy following this new design?

  • @cindy-king,

I rarely go to Twitter.com. If I’m on my desktop I use Tweetdeck, on my phone it’s the Twitter app. I sometimes like to check out someone’s profile, background image and all that, so I’ll go to Twitter.com, but it’s not how I USE Twitter.

Yes, my use of Twitter is constantly evolving. I think I talk more about biz on Twitter now, but I’m still fairly irreverent and off topic on my own account. On my @flytenewmedia account I’m mostly “on message.”

I need to check out  the new designs, especially for brands, especially since I just reserved @flytetraining to support our new flyte training offering.

  • @rich-brooks I think you just answered my question, but I’ve been thinking about the best ways to manage multiple accounts on Twitter. How do you manage content and lists for multiple profiles (personal vs. professional)?

Thanks to you and other responses.

  • @phil-mershon From a technical standpoint I load them all into Tweetdeck and Twitter on the iPhone.

Well, except for one secret one that I only use for vents that I can’t say as myself. ;)

From a strategy standpoint, @flytenewmedia is pretty much me, but with about 75% less snark, and hold the bacon and zombies.

Still, flyte’s supposed to have some personality, so we get a little silly over there. Plus, a few of my coworkers have the keys to that particular account, so they can use it as well.

  • Rich…A private twitter account to vent…I LOVE that..gonna have to steal that one for there are many times I have need to do that!.  I too use Tweetdeck for my accounts but I am also on Twitter for clients and then I use twitter.com…I suppose I will just have to wait to see the new layout first before I say anything. I have been using it for at least 3 years now and I use it to share..I like sharing and promoting others that I feel are valuable.  I have received private messages thanking me for that as well as new clients as a result too. I am just starting to use marketmesuite.com which is pretty cool social media dashboard so far.

Yes, I have changed to answer the original question…I believe I use more hashtags and more focused on my ideal clients now when I follow people…so definitely more strategic.  I use it on my phone so that I can always glance and see what’s going on.

  • I mix it up in our farmily Farm account @thehoads, friendly banter, occasional snark, sales and marketing info, news links.  I certainly use more hash tags now than when I started and I have found a simple way to follow news that interests me and my occupation by following appropriate people. So its a microphone and a receiver; quite the addiction if one isn’t

  • Hootsuite is my platform of choice.

With the business account I retweet and post things related mostly to marketing and signs.  We try to retweet local organizations’ events and other announcements several times a week.

The other huge aspect of twitter is keeping an eye on competitors to see what they’re announcing and the direction in which they are going.

Personally, I’m all over the place.  From hippos to boomerangs to baseball.  And of course, staying in touch with friends in far away places.
