How do you use Bit.ly? Or do you? (17 posts)

  • Seems very few people are taking advantage of Bit.ly and more specifically utalizing  its metrics potential. Do you use it? How do you use it?

  • @jasonwiser I use bitly but haven’t really been leveraging the metrics enought yet. I am in the process of working on including that with my analytics reporting.  I also use the Owly from HootSuite, and again the same applies to leveraging metrics.

  • @jasonwiser

LIke @joanmuschampfagnani I only scrape the surface of bit.ly. However, it’s my go to tool, because I can always log back in and see the click throughs of previous bit.ly’s, even if I didn’t pay much attention when I first created it.

  • Well, now see….  I just learned yet another thing thanks to SME. :)   I didn’t even realize bit.ly kept track of the click throughs; I only occasionally use it for links that are way too long or when I don’t want to tip people off on the “punch line” via the SEO URL.  :)

  • @jasonwiser Like  @joanmuschampfagnani and  @rich-brooks I have yet to really look at the click through metics (or the Ow.li links). Right now I track my tweets via basic metrics from Buffer (clicks, retweets) and Facebook through their analytics.

  • Or what about using the custom URL button to change the bitly from just random letters to something recognizable.

I just put up a quick tip vid that might interest bitly people. Some creative and interesting uses. http://youtu.be/4r70MOVuMO0

  • I’ve seen some url shortening services that are being banned or blacklisted by some networks. Is this something that bit.ly may face in the future?

  • @davidblide I think Bit.ly is a respected service and one of the most reliable. I am curious which sites do you see that are banning URl shortners?

  • I have learned more about Bit.ly by reading the comments on how other people are using the service.  I definitely will have to dig in deeper this week and learn more about the full extent of this application.

I started using Bit.ly because of my increased Twitter use. There are some links that just take up too much room and it makes the posted tweet look a lot cleaner and easier to read.

  • I have a sidebar for bit.ly that allows me to shorten the address of whatever site I am on. Then click the copy button which allows me to paste a shortened address in twitter or anywhere I need to. Helpful when needed but a disadvantage is the name of the site is not in the address anymore. For example, my site name will not show up so people won’t know where it is taking them unless you state somewhere else that fact. @jasonwiser

  • I use bit.ly mainly for link shortening and tracking clicks.  I was unaware of the custom link naming feature, so thanks for that @jasonwiser.

  • @jasonwiser First thing that comes to mind is email. There are several url shortners that Gmail bans. I’ve also seen some Ning social sites that do not allow them.

  • I  use bitly.com for sharing on social network and view clicks. It’ s very nice using it.With recent developments other site hootsuite .com and  seesmic.com play an importance role on my personal social efforts.I have not ignored using bitly.com completely

  • @deairby , I use Pretty Links, a Wordpress plugin that lets you shorten URLs and keep the name of the site in it.

  • I started out with bit.ly, but now I set up my own with ShortSwitch (http://shortswitch.com).

  • I do like Bitly but now everything changed.. They created a new look to the site and now I have to get used to finding information that I need. I do like the customization feature.. I use this a lot.. have a lot of people clicking on the link, which is good… but conversions are slow… I do think FB and others are blocking this.

  • Bitly.com is popular in the social sites.Everyone has something to say about it.It’s nice shortening service.I have not tried the customise feature.I  will check it and try them again.

I would like to ask is it possible to connect bitly.com to social sites like google +..
