How do you decide what keywords to target? (15 posts)

Topic tags: keywords, SEO
  • We haven’t talked a lot about SEO in this group, and yet it’s so critical for small businesses to increase their online visibility!

How do you decide which keywords to target on your website, blog or videos? Do you use a tool, a website, your gut?

What helps you get in front of your ideal customers when they’re searching for a service like yours?

  • I think this is the most important step to planning your social media strategy and often it has been my experience the one most overlooked!  It takes time and effort, but pays off in the long run because so many small business owners build websites and their developers never tell them they need anything like this.  adwords.google.com and use the keyword tool to figure out what is best for your business.

  • I have heard adwords.google.com recommended, as well. I intend to give it a try and will report what results I am able to obtain here. You, bet.

  • The Google keyword tool and Google trends are two great resources for figuring out – and keeping an eye on your targeted keywords.

Other tricks:Content, content, content! Relevant content, targeting the right keywords will bring clicks and views – which Google eats up!

The newest thing too is Google+

    Link building :)

  • Thanks for reminding me of Adwords:  I just went and it gave me all the words and combinations that I need.  Most of mine are low search words, so when my blog goes live it will be easier for the little spiders (or what ever bug they are) to find me.  Thanks again for the reminder.

  • Another tool I like is Keyword Questions from Wordtracker.

Put in a keyword (broad terms work best here) and Wordtracker returns questions asked at its partner search engines.

You can just start going down the list, creating blog posts and videos based on the questions asked! Go ahead and try it…I use it whenever I’m lost for topics.

I use Google Keyword tools. I will do a general search 1st, then take the highly competitive keywords and search those terms. It was huge for us.

I found words that I never imagined would make sense, but they were still appropriate and in our genre. We get numerous companies filling out the forms on our website for sites to be built in Dallas / Fort Worth.

@rich-brooks thanks for idea on Keyword Questions. I will be checking it out!

  • Yes, keywords are very important to good SEO and the Google Keyword tool is a great, free resource. Wordtracker too.

However, there is no substitute for a good solid understanding of the basic principles of SEO. You don’t need to become an expert but it helps tremendously to educate yourself in the basics of SEO.

One of the best resources I found when I was beginning to learn about SEO was The Beginners Guide to SEO which is free on the SEOMoz website. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to improve the ranking of their blog/website.

  • Thanks for the advice on this. I’m just about to launch my first website and am going to have to get my head round this subject, to which I am going to grab a coffee and read the beginners guide.

  • I was curious about SEO for a while, but after setting up the basic meta keywords and description, I never worry about SEO.

When I find a topic that burns a hole in my mind, I write about it. I never bother about keywords.

I’ve seen blogs that have been so optimized for SEO–it’s such a turn-off to read. It’s like you are talking to a machine.

My two cents, as long as you update your site with relevant and engaging content, you do not have to worry about keyword density. People will look for you and tell their friends about you when they like what you are writing about.

  • For me, more important than what keywords to use [from researching on google keyword tool] is how these keywords are used by your target demographics in phrasing their questions and concerns about your product or service..  this is especially important for small business owners competing on a very specific and small niche..

To get some answers, i had to immerse myself in groups, forums and discussions related to my service.  I also curated content on facebook, twitter and google reader to see how potential followers are phrasing their questions and what their real concerns are.   since my target market is highschool students, this research method not only enabled me to learn what keywords and questions they are asking but what current topics are hot among them as well, this gives me some idea on what spin to put in my content to make it more shareable- for this month its the Hunger games movie..: D

  • I think a lot about key words is common sense. It’s a matter of putting yourself in the shoes of your readers. I have read all about the analytics for finding key words and long tail key words, etc., and I’ve even attempted to follow a few systems. But I invariably end up with the words I would have used anyway.

James Wedmore’s videos about video marketing (videotrafficacademy.com) give good analysis on this process though.

  • I used Google keyword tool for my initial research of keywords. Not all suggested keywords can be applied to your project. So I need to assess and measure the keywords if they are really suitable to optimize or not.

  • I like the external adwords editor & have kicked the tires on the following software:

    SEOprofiler
    IBP
    Market Samuri
    Wordtracker

Like little bits & pieces of each one, been using SEOprofiler the most primarily because its easier on the wallet month to month

  • Keyword Internet Marketing Tips

When starting an online business, keyword internet marketing is very important. Keywords are what people type into the search bar when they are looking for a website that offers the product they need to buy. Knowing the keywords your customers are using and optimizing them into your website will put you miles ahead of your competition.

To find the keywords your customers are using, get yourself a good keyword internet marketing tool. There are many to choose from. Once you understand how to properly use keywords the quicker you can start ranking high on a search engine results page, increase traffic to your website and start making money.

When educating yourself about what a good keyword is, you will find that a good keyword is one that does not show results in the millions. You need to use keywords that are more specifically targeted to what you are selling. Doing this will rank you higher on the search engine results page, also.Ranking high on the search engine results page will result in getting more people to click through to your website and more business for you.

This is an extremely competitive world and anything you can do to get an advantage over your competition is beneficial.Along with low competition make sure your keyword has a higher search number as well. The number of customers searching that keyword and the number of websites competing for those customers should be at least 1500 searches per month and under 20,000 competition. Any keyword you find that shows both of these standards should be a great keyword for you to use.

Open up a Notepad file and start yourself a list. Copy and paste any good keywords you find into your Notepad file. Then they will be ready to just plug in when you need them.Sometimes these keywords are not easy to find, although it is very exciting when you do find them because now you have something not everyone else knows about.

Keywords that are more specifically targeted to what you are selling are called long-tail keywords. Long-tail keywords are keywords that are more than one or two words and even as long as a complete sentence usually describing exactly what the customer is looking for.Imagine the traffic and sales figures if you are on top of the search engine results page and have these keywords that describe exactly what the customer wants. Boggles the mind!

You could be making money, hand over fist, in a very short time with the right keywords. A good keyword research tool can make all the difference in the world. So, do yourself a favor and educate yourself on keywords and where to find good ones then put them to good use and optimize your website with them.

Remember one thing though, do not get complacent even if you do find a good keyword, searches and searchers change and you need to keep tabs on new keywords and then update your website as needed. When you use keyword internet marketing correctly, it will be as good as gold to you and your bottom line.
