How do we separate hype from reality in social media as we enter 2012? (8 posts)

  • I need some more ideas for my next blog post. What’s your thoughts on these guys:

“How do we separate hype from reality in social media as we enter 2012?”

  • Hi @valeriejoydeveza

I think it is important to focus on the customers/audience.  Think about how to be interesting, useful and entertaining for them.
If your intent and objectives are well thought out and you are getting engagement from your audience you are doing something right.  It’s easy to get distracted by the latest thinking or shiny new gimmick.  If you get the basics right then use the whistles and bells to enhance the audience experience rather than be the audience experience.  There is little longevity without substance.

    Hope this helps

I’m assuming your talking about social media for business. If so, I think you have to focus on ROI.

Keep track of where you site visitors are coming from, and whether your activity on social media sites is paying off in terms of leads, sales, new business, etc.

There are also some benefits to shaving time off things like customer service, which some companies can take advantage of.

  • @valeriejoydeveza  I’ve devoted countless hours of my life over the past eight months — hours I’ll never get back!! — in the pursuit of understanding how SMM works, I mean really  works.  I’ve had to spend so many hours because it takes   time to LEARN how to separate the gems from the garbage.  Before I discovered the gems, I did what the garbage told me to do.  It was literally the blind leading the blind, except I was the only one of us acknowledging the blindness.  Everyone’s such an expert, right?

My way of separating the hype from the reality is to spread the word about those truly reliable, smart, trustworthy, informed people and sites (like SME) that all help us learn to navigate SMM and actually succeed in our pursuits.  Share the best, toss the rest.

  • It has always been my best tool to look into the Substance of any offerings, forgoit the genre. Many times, yes, we are swept up into the glitz and glamour and the blitz of any new paradigm. But probably the best indication of a practices efficacy is the evidence of results. If our criteria is how effectively groupings of like mind in large numbers can be drawn together, there appears to be some hope. Social media is proving to be a medium for this purpose. Now, the major question is can we all proceed to become of the same mind as far as the most effective goal. To my mind the general health of the entire grouping should be of tantamount importance. Together, we can surely determine what is substance and what mere vapor.

  • @marketmy @rich-brooks @bethnovick @durkbarton thanks for your reply guys. really appreciate it. :)

  • @valeriejoydeveza You want to know how to separate hype from reality? Don’t get fans and followers just to have them. What I mean is don’t go for quantity. A lot of people get caught up in looking at how many fans or followers they have, they completely lose track of the (business) purpose to even have social media. It is to engage with your potential customers/clients and give them a way to engage back. It develops professional, emotional and trust based relationships as well so people can get to know the brands they love on a deeper level. Unfortunately a lot of people get lost in the hype to have a lot of fans or followers they lose track of this and focus on getting higher numbers. This will almost always result in poor customer participation and engagement. This is obviously because targeting your audience was never done, so now you have a ton of people …. Who couldn’t care less who you are and what your business does. Having a lower number of targeted fans and followers is always better than having a high number of randoms. Targeted fans/follows will pass your news on to people they know who will like it and so on, thus social networking.I hope this helps you! Happy New Year!

  • @sgsrecording Thanks! Happy New Year! Can’t agree more. A lot of people focus on the tools. They forget that tools is not as important as the people who uses it.

And that before you focus on the “media” stuff.. focus first on the “social” part of it.
