How do I leverage a big ”win?” (5 posts)

  • Hello all – I am looking for some help here. I manage several social media sites for my clients; this includes creating their social media presence, posting on their behalf, commenting on comments, etc. One of my clients has recently received a ton of attention – they made the Oprah’s Gift Guide for December and were featured on the Today Show this morning. I have tagged Oprah, the Today Show and Ann Curry on their pages. Another one has been asked to be on a board with a national company to consult on a new healthier food bar for children. Another won a local award.

I now have companies approaching me for help with their social media and they are looking for me to create this sort of buzz for them. I know I cannot promise them national attention, but I would like to give a go. This has all happened within the past few weeks, it is very much taking me out of a comfort zone – a good thing for sure, I am all for growing! I know I need to utilize these new national contacts! Any and all suggestions would be so very appreciated!

I’d start by managing expectation. Let them know that these companies didn’t start out with this much buzz, and this “overnight attention” took months or years of your hard work.

Also, deflect some of the praise. Say these companies had some newsworthy content…”what have you done that’s newsworthy?”

Trust me, if people who have nothing interesting to offer expect you to get them on Oprah everyone’s going to be disappointed.

  • @Rich Brooks – thank you for your info. I have let these potential clients know that the company already has fantastic marketing efforts along with an amazing product already in place. Social media took it all to a bigger and more noticeable place. And yes, it was a lot of work to get there! One potential client really does have an Oprah worthy offering – they have caught the attention of Nora Ephron which is a definite plus. I do believe they are newsworthy. Now I just need to know the best way to make the next step.

  • @Mich Congratulations on your success! That’s fantastic.. One thing that I’ve learned is that whenever you have that kind of outcome – or close a big sale – the next thing to do is to call another prospect. In those moments, we are brimming with self confidence and success – and others pick up on that.Well done, and keep going!

  • @Trefor Munn-Venn – Great advice! Thank you!
